Our research teams had developed the Electronic Cultural Atlas of Chosun Korea which has multidimensional structure including time value, space value, and subject value from 2004 to 2007. And also the researchers have been carried out a application studies concerned living culture of Chosun period that based on database of place-name, Jiriji(a geography of Chosun), and folk.
It may be summarized that the results of work in part are as follows.
■ Database Construction For the Electronic Cultural Atlas
The construction of database was consisted of three parts which are place-name, Jiriji, and folk based on the groundwork using Geographical Information System such as database schema, construction of base map, development of editing tools, and so on. For construction of these database, the main sources are map, Jiriji, geographical dictionary, and collection of folklore data, etc. In detail, the first, place-name teams have constructed database by input all sorts of data related to geographical names which are classified by administrative place-names, physical place-names, a d human place-names. It was been based on diversity sources such as 1:50,000 Topographic Maps of Korea, these are produced between the late 19th century and early 20th century, Provincial Map(1872), An Exhaustive Bibliography of Korean Place-name, Geographical Dictionary of North Korea, and so on. The second, Jiriji teams have constructed database by input all items and contents of historical material related to geography edited by government(Jiriji) and geography edited by local government(Eupji) of chosun dynasty such as Sejongshillokjiriji(15C), Sinjeungdonggukyeojiseungram(16C), Yeojidoseo(18C), Deadongjiji(19C), and so on. The third, folk teams have constructed database by input folk songs, tales, and folk beliefs based on folklore material such as An Outline of Korean Oral Literature, Oral Folk Song of Korea, Source Book of Literature Tale, The Complete Edition of Korean Folk Music, and so on. This work is achieved with ArcGIS program that all sorts of data are transformed into the relational database which is able to mutual linkage systematically. And our research teams are open these works to the public on some web service through www.atlaskorea.org.
■ Individual And Collaborate Researches
A part of research is consisted of diversity studies based on methodology of research, analysis of text and contents, practical use of database, a comparative study of living culture concerned with our works. Up to now, individual and collaborate researches produced or in process of study are as many as 51 papers totally. All of those research papers were got a chance for the presentation at an international and internal conference. Our researchers have participated and read 6 papers at international conferences of ECAI was hold on Shanghai(May 2005), Seoul(August 2006), Moscow(May 2007) and 3 papers at conference of AKSE was hold on sheffield university, England(July 2005). In case of an internal conference, roughly 20 research papers were read at internal conference was hold on Institute of Korean Culture, Korea University, The Association of Korean Cultural and Historical Geographers, and some academical symposium.
Our research teams had ultimately constructed an enormous amount to 1,460,000 records of database for the past three years, including place-name 1,292,156 records, Jiriji data 141,528 records, folk data 25,556 records. And also, this project will provide basic data about diversity living culture of Chosun Korea through the web service and a practical studies. Furthermore, it will be expected as valuable and useful database in order to advance of Korean cultural and historical geographies.
