The work of 'Compilation of the Oriental Classics Translation Terms and Example Dictionary' aims to maximize the availability for academic future generations, by presenting the explanation and references of difficult terms that they face when translating Oriental classics, by translating various examples in all reference books, by developing DB(Database), and offering web services. The compilation of the dictionary that reflect the limit of existing Chinese dictionaries put emphasis on specific goals, such as minimizing errors in translation, improving problems of using Chinese dictionary, raising quality of translation by offering various examples, and presenting new direction of compilation.
For the compilation, our research team collected a vast body of entries. The entries include Gan-Chal(Korean old vernacular letters) terms, Chinese character of Korean style, names and pseudonyms of people, place names, and Yi-Du(Orthography of Korean by Chinese character) terms, as well as important entries included in existing dictionaries. Based on these, our team presented the references and interpretation of each entry, and the original text and translation of various examples. Our team worked on the compilation for three years, collecting a vast body of entries in alphabetical order three times. The primary research worked on entries in 'ㄱ~ㅂ(1st to 6th)', the secondary 'ㅅ~ㅊ(7th to 10th), the tertiary 'ㅋ~ㅎ(11th to 14th), name of historical place, Yi-Du terms, and so on. The work was done by setting up various ways of indexing, based on investigation, collection, and organization of data, stereoscopic vision of translation examples, and development of DB(Database).
After three years of compilation, the dictionary achieved the inclusion of 10,306 common terms, 4,726 Gan-Chal terms, 18,907 explanation of entries, 8,758 explanation of references, 22,094 explanation of examples, 30,466 names and pseudonyms of people, 4,034 names of historical place, and 2,409 Yi-Du terms. We also developed database of the work in web site.(http://ctdic.kr)
