❏ Objective of study Due to the development of digital technology, the demand for designer who can understand and apply computer technology will be increased. In this aspect, the basic design education may be important to cultivate the scientific and objective modeling thought which can be connected to understanding the essence of technology besides the development of students' subjective sense. Ultimately, basic design education should be attained so that the modelling sense and understanding power of technology can be integrated as the capability of an individual. In this viewpoint, the following annual tasks are examined to attain the development of education program (pedagogy media and class model) which can cultivate objective modelling thought in the basic design education through a method, patterning with mathematical material related to modelling. ∙Task in the 1st year: Investigating the meaning & value of mathematical modelling as media of cultivating objective modelling thought ∙Task in the 2nd year: Examining the patterning with mathematical material related to modelling ∙Task in the 3rd year: Examining practice & effect of education on the development of actual pattern ❒Contents and method of study The study was done mainly around theoretic investigation & survey of present situation, patterning and class and questionnaire. In the 1st year, the necessity and educational value of mathematical model was investigated as media of understanding technology and cultivating objective modelling thought. To this end, the direction of basic design education in consideration of the era of digital technology was enhanced and the influential relation with mathematics in modelling & art was checked to confirm the meaning and role of mathematical model. Next, the role of computer which can be told to be tool of design these days was investigated to the extent of basic design course. Finally, the characteristics of mathematical model was investigated through the author of model. In the 2nd year, the study was done in the order of analysis & patterning of works and investigation of effect. Mathematical modelling work was analyzed to draw out the common regularity (symmetry) inherent in modelling expression and the structure of generating mathematical form based on symmetry was formulated. Further, the application of mathematical principle and its modelling characteristics were investigated in the course to produce actual plane and cubic pattern on the basis of formulated structure. In the 3rd year, the developed pattern was used to examine objective educational effect through practical class of patterning process. The educational effect of pedagogy media in the basic design education was investigated on the basis of work completed through class composed of pattern development using mathematical material, expression utilizing pattern, etc as well as observing the trainees and questionnaire. ❒ Result of promotion The value of mathematical model was enhanced in the basic design education through the study in the 1st year. As a result, it was found that mathematical model could be told to be the catalyst which could encourage students to understand mathematical material and to be interested in scientific technology and could motivate them for production on account of unique expression result. Further, we think that mathematical model can trigger and cultivate objective thought required for modelling expression and mathematical model has educational value in that it is useful as means to understand the base of scientific technology. In the study of the 2nd year, it was investigated whether the patterning of mathematical material for basic design education and such course is valuable as means of basic design education. The study found symmetry as the general principle of form configuration by analyzing mathematical work & formulated the form configuration structure of model based on symmetry to systematic model of Cell-Unit-Structure. Further, the application of mathematical principle and its modelling effect was examined by producing plane & cubic pattern on the basis of model. In conclusion, the patterning of mathematical material is subject to the premise, knowledge in mathematical principle and full comprehension of modelling phenomenon. Thus, it can be said that patterning promote logical thought such as comprehension of concept, classification of types and establishment of proper concept. Moreover, patterning needs the modelling power and creative thought to infer concept and to reconfigure phenomenon, application and transformation of concept besides understanding the concept. Thus, it is thought to be educational method to develop students' intellectual ability and creative modelling thought at the same time. In the 3rd year, it was examined whether practical class applying the mathematical pattern and learners' objective modelling thought was formed by such class. Further, it was observed that most learners in mathematical patterning which applied pattern gradually acquired logical propensity as they repetitiously produced with thought and thought during production. Moreover, the questionnaire showed that the interest & confidence in mathematical modelling, internal motive over new modelling expression and searching propensity of things are enhanced. As a result, it was found that the learners' mathematical propensity was higher before class was performed, i.e., interest & confidence in mathematical modelling through practical class applying the pattern, triggering curiosity on new modelling expression and enhancing the searching propensity. As stated above, the education value and necessity of mathematical modelling for learners in the design series was confirmed through the process of enhancing & patterning the value of mathematical modelling and practical class of patterning. We will develop this study as the class model that can cultivate objective modelling thought & pedagogy media of basic design education by supplementing teaching materials to form the learners' internal motive through constant expression in modelling later.
