- As the importance of leisure is stressed, leisure education became one of five values in physical education curriculum, However, unlike other four values, research of leisure education as school education has not been conducted much in Korea.
- Thus, the purposes of the study are (1) to investigate the need of leisure education and provide the direction of leisure education through leisure education theories, definitions, history, and cases in U.S. etc., (2) to conduct content analysis on leisure activity sections in the authorized physical education textbooks of 2009 curriculum revision and provide the direction for future leisure education, (3) to survey and explore the various leisure education perception and issues of elementary school teachers, and (4) to propose the direction of leisure education.
- Until now, leisure education has been considered just as the perspective of 'leisure as the subject of education' because of the situations including sedentary lifestyle, lack of leisure experiences, societal changes, and education culture in Korea. However, through leisure education, educators should teach the values and advantage of leisure and should help students understand leisure as the overall concept. Also, educators should develop leisure education program for students in order to obtain leisure skills and utilize leisure resources.
- The content analysis results of 12 different authorized physical education textbooks show that the portion of the leisure section is smaller than other four life-skill sections in the textbooks. Although the titles and organization of the contents are not identical, understanding of the leisure contents or perception are written before experiencing of leisure activities. Both creativity and character education factors are reflected in the context relatively well. Compared to the previous curriculum, the instructional objectives related to cognitive domain are increased; however, the major portion of the contents is related to physical activity domain and the instructional objectives on affective domain are still lack.
- According to the survey results on elementary school teachers, the teachers were also unclear about the meaning of leisure and leisure education and experienced various problems to teach leisure at school mainly due to the lack of leisure resources, programs, and knowledge.
- For better leisure education at elementary schools, (1) teachers should provide the education on leisure perception and leisure resources as well as leisure skill education; (2) leisure specialists and experts should participate in writing the leisure education section of the textbook with teachers and professors; and (3) the continuous education for teachers should be followed to let them provide leisure education better.
