The imperial Korea was the period when one was called by the nation and accommodated voluntarily oneself in the social imagination that tried to build a nation-state. In this course, the international recognition was a passage to feel the lack of the imperial Korea as a nation-state and a chance to provoke his desire that fills the lack and reorganizes himselfe.
The dynamic symbols that reflected the international recognition were worked by various types such as the Western’s lifestyle and the conflict between the nations, not the ways such as a lead editorial and introduction of foreign culture. On the other hand, in the paradigm of modernization, the desires that tried to make unstably up oneself in the conflict and the struggle between tradition and modern, between savageness and civilization, between subject and other and between new one and old one clashed over.
While the international recognition of the period of the imperial Korea was spread as it was compressed into ‘enlightenment’, pros and cons for enlightenment was seriously taken issue. Like the then current newspaper, 『Jeguk Sinmun』 also was making up the normative discourse that had to push ahead with enlightenment. However, the gap between the directivity of discourse and how to make up oneself occurred with 1907. Since 1907, 『Jeguk Sinmun』 changed the editorial strategy such as the space of paper, studies of knowledge and a new placement of novel. We think that such change was that the directing point of individual recognition and strenuous efforts were changed towards civilization and knowledge.
Therefore, with various symbols in articles and serialized novels of 『Jeguk Sinmun』, we need to consider that how the early modern newspaper understood the East such as China and Japan and the West such as America and Uk, how to have it, how to make up oneself and its variation aspects.
Especially, the main object of study is Lee Hai Jo’s 「GoMokHwa」, 「BinSangSeol」, 「WonAngDo」, 「GuMaGeum」, 「HongDoHwa」, 「ManWolDae」, 「SsangOkJeok」 and 「MoRanByeong」 that were published since 1907. We will find the subject that is found in the course of analyzing the international recognition and multi-level recognition such as the author’s internal conflicts and suture in articles and Lee Hai Jo’s works. As following this, we will review the path that public inner side was built in the early modern as the international recognition was on par with civilization.
