This study approached the Central Asia which turned out as one of the practical as well as academic theme since the collapse of the USSR and the 9.11 terror, with historical, politico-economic and cultural perspectives under the project title of "Civilization and Anti-Civilization of Central Asia: Religion vs. Culture, Revolution vs. Modernization and World System vs. Conflict". With the historical occurrence of events and the systemic changes in mind, it analyzed the nineteenth century Central Asia's religions, cultural origins, and revolutions, wars, modernization process of the twentieth century Inner Asia, and its anti-civilizational appearance of the twenty first century.
The first part of this study, 'the Past and Present of the Central Asian Studies', contains two articles in regard to current research on the Central Asia at home and abroad and the alternatives for the development of the Central Asian studies. The former indicates the limitations of established studies, while the latter shows new themes and trends concerning the Central Asia studies on the basis of critical review of the limitations.
The second part of this study, as named "the civilization of the Central Asia", stresses on 'the setting of pre-modernity' in the nineteen century through the examinations of nationalism, religion, and culture in the Central Asia. It also points out internal dynamic powers for the formation of nation states in "the Great Game" periods under the setting of pre-modernity. In the meantime, the study of "Silk Road" history emphasizes that the Central Asia was the origin of civilization.
In the third part, "modernization and revolution in the Central Asia", the regional changes of the Central Asia in the twentieth century is accounted for on the basis of the frameworks of revolution, war, modernization, and independence. In particular, it explains the process of systematic changes in political and economic areas since the post cold war and confrontation between the United Sates and the USSR by the case study of nation states, including in inland region of the Central Asia such as Xinjiang, Uighur, and Afghanistan, It also intends to explore the hidden dynamism originated from relationship between Russia and the Central Asia or the USSR and the Central Asia.
The study on "Anti-civilization in the Central Asia" as the fourth part of this study examines disorder in the Central Asia with independence, modernization, and globalization after the disintegration of the USSR as follows: inter war and terror, intervention of powerful countries, and emergence of Islam political movement in the Central Asia. It makes an effort to analyze the historical roots of the disorder.
The last part of this research, "future of the Central Asia", focused on struggles between big countries and regional states in relation to exploitation of resources, specifically oil, in the Central Asia where has been regarded as important geopolitical region and a region rich in natural resources at recent times. The study on prospect of the Central Asia's changes in the near future will need to depend on the analysis of exploitation and competition in regard to resources in this part, and then the research on growth of the Central Asia as the beginning of civilization will require the consideration of whole themes in this project.
