1차년도: According to the Chinese literature, Dosang Narye or Baekheejapgi was performed at Palgwanhwe* during the Shilla Dynasty. But there are very few subsequent records on Palgwanhwe. But it is known that Seolhwasandaehee* and Gwangdaehee* performed during Yeondeunghwe* were continued and absorbed as part of Goongjeong Narye during the Joseon Dynasty. The first record on Dosang Narye is a ceremony welcoming the first king of the early Joseon Dynasy, Lee Seong Gye where Chaeboong* and Japhee conducted at Youngjoeui were performed. Ever since, Japhee began to be called Nahee. Given that Dosang Bakheejapgi was called Nahee and later Narye while such terms were not found in China, there is a strong possibility that it was affected by Korea's unique Goongjeong Narye.
Dosang Narye was considered inseparable from Chaeboong during the Joseon Dynasty. Meanwhile, these terms were not found in the Chinese literature on Youngjoeui. Although they are similar to the performance conducted on Wonsojeol or Chinese spring festival, the latter was not developed into the court ceremony and far from Youngjoeui.
It was once suggested that Dosang Narye performed at the beginning of a guest welcoming ceremony had the features of exorcism seeking to eliminate evil spirits that might have accompanied envoys. But it turned out that Dosang Narye had festival and entertaining characteristics rather than exorcising ones.
It is Korean unique tradition to perform Chaeboong and Japhee (i.e Narye) at guest welcoming ceremony. The tradition conducted at Palgwanhwe during the Shilla Dynasty continued into Goryeo Dynasty as part of Yeondeunghwe and Seolhwasandaehee and into Joseon Dynasty as part of Goongjeong Narye. There is strong possibility that Japhee or Nahee performed at Goongjeong Narye was expanded in its meaning to be adopted at Youngjoeui. In short, Dosang Baekheejaphee was expanded in its meaning to be called as Nahee and Narye in the early Joseon Dynasty. For Dosang Narye that is unique Korean tradition different from Chinese Youngjoeui in its process, there was an argument for its elimination and a relevant memorial was presented to the king in the early Joseon Dynasty. But it was defined as something that should not be abolished and maintained until the end of the Joseon Dynasty.
2차년도: Narye can not be prepared by Court music organization because of its unique characteristic which performed by clowns. Especially, Narye performed by clowns as a circus was considered as the authentic tradition and the welcoming ceremony of our nation, and its origination has a long history.
The organization for this Narye became specialized and just got the name of Naryechung or Naryedogam in late Joseon dynasty. Although these names were appeared in late Chosun dynasty, the organization for Narye had already existed before that period.
As Narye was originated from Japhui of Yeundeunghui in Goryo dynasty, which stemmed from Shilla dynasty, the origination of Naryechung also came from Sandaesaek in Goryo dynasty. Because there is few records about Sandaesaek, the details about the time and the structure etc. of that are unknown. And this Sandaesaek was incorporated into Yeondeungdogam in the late Goryo dynasty, and after that Yeondeungdogam was abolished in king Choongryul also in Goryo dynasty. So, the professional preparation association for Narye could not last until Joseon dynasty begins. This phenomenon caused from not only the abolishment of Palgwanhui and Yeondeunghui with the begining of Joseon dynasty because of the atmosphere of Sung Confucianism, but various Jabhui's the only attachment to the Yeondeunghui. These appearances result to the abolishment of Jabhui in Goryo dynasty.
Even though Sandaesaek or Yeondeungdogam couldn't be lasted and get the status as a professional association for Narye/Jabhui, Sapyungsoonwiboo and Goonkisi had played the role in combination temporarily for the necessity of Narye for welcoming ceremony. The reason for being existence of two association just for the one performance must be the need of two organization for two sided stages around Sandae.
This tradition of two united organizations for Narye has continued in Joseon dynasty, one party is Uigeumboo and the other is Goonkisi. In early Joseon dynasty, there is no name for these two parties that prepare for the Narye as a welcoming ceremony, but by the time of king Sejong period these two parties had become the concept that represent the left and the right part of welcoming ceremony. These no name parties finally became to the names of Naryechung as the temporal organization in king Gwanghaegoon in late Joseon dynasty. This Naryechung also called Naryedogam at the same time and it was also a temporal organization such as those(Uigeumboo and Goonkis)i in early Joseon dynasty.
Naryechung was composed with the two parties; Jawbyun(left side) and Woobyun(right side), and these two parties' tradition was a very unique appearance of preparation for events. Usually, to arrange for one event, there is only one head and the following hierarchy system, but these two parties of preparation system was extraordinary. According to the text book {Naryechung Deungrok} or {the True record of the Chosŏn dynasty}, these two sided parties are a competition and also a mutual assistance system.
According to the text book {Joseon Saryak}, this system preparing Narye for the welcoming ceremony seemed to be the tradition stemmed from the Shilla dynasty. Although Sandae, Gyulchae and Narye are common features in east Asia, and Sandaes in Goryo and Joseon dynasty are also related in those in China, Narye performed consisted of two sided stages and operation in welcoming ceremony didn't originated from China. Therefore this two sided system for welcoming ceremony can be regarded as one of the our nation's long historical traditions.
