  • Looking into the social and existential conflicts that East German women suffered in United Germany is meaningful in the aspect that we can guess the sufferings and obstacles that North Korean women are supposed to experience in United Korean Peninsula. Unification of Germanies make us realize that the internal unification is much more difficult and arduous than the external one. The precepts suggested by East German women`s troubles after its unification can be divided into two categories.
The first is the necessity of continued criticism and alternatives on the restraining structure of patriarch system held by South Korean social structure. The reality of United Germany in which East German women remain “the greatest victims in the unification procedure” is stemmed from the fact that the share of damage due to restructuring was primarily directed to women. More than 30% of East German women lost their jobs and which brought about massive joblessness, occupying almost half of total unemployment ratio and they have been until now suffering from social and economical difficulties after unification. In case of reemployment, difficult job hunting makes it possible for East German women to succumb to cheap labor market or to be marginalized. Labor market condition of preferred male employment and social prejudices against East German women underestimate their abilities and make their employment difficult. Their workplace was the foundation on which women can support themselves economically, the core factor of self realization in socialistic system, and above all social and cultural space where they can establish their identity in community. Their joblessness is aggravating their existential crisis, needless to say economical downfall.
The second shows that unity should not involve only problems to be solved about ‘system’ or ‘structure’ but also ones about ‘human beings’ and ‘ethos’. Without considering their view of values and identities stemmed from socialistic system, United Germany demands they should adapt themselves to market economic system and culture which they are undergoing in oppressive distress. In the reality that nothing ‘East German’ was left behind, they came to be ‘outsiders in their country’ where they have to restart from the first.
As the example of United Germany implies, the issue is not limited to pros and cons on unification but is to be centered on whether to accomplish ‘a certain one’. The concrete effects which unity has on South and North Korean women should be carefully scrutinized and prepared for. The relationships between two Koreas, presently centered on the reunion of separated families, will be enlarged up to various cultural interchanges. The active researches should be made on North Korean cultures involving love, marriage and family relation and women`s structure of consciousness and their daily lives, thereby seeking for the way of unification, not lateral absorption.
For realization of a proper unification, the open-minds and mutual respects should be solutions to be implemented by two Koreas. The discussion on unity should be continuously developed for social and cultural unification so that the way of thinking, living styles, securement of identity and the standard of self-realization and the differences can be tolerated by each other, which could not help being separately formed in different regimes.
