본 논문은 자기희생적 리더십에 대한 그 동안의 연구를 검토하고 앞으로의 연구 방향을 탐색하였다. 이를 위하여 생물학과 사회과학 분야에서 자기희생과 관련된 연구와 이론들을 검토한 후 자기희생적 리더십의 이론적 특징과 실증연구 결과들을 검토하였다. 구체적으로, 자기희생의 개념, 자기희생의 조직론적 해석, 조직상황 하에서의 희생의 발생 및 자기희생적 리더십의 효과에 대한 가설 및 이에 대한 실증연구 결과를 검토하였다. 마지막으로, 미래의 연구방향을 이론개선 측면과 실증연구 측면에서 토의하였다. 구체적으로, 희생의 장으로서의 조직관점, 동기상실의 사회적 전염, 자기희생과 조직문화와 조직설계의 상호작용에 관한 연구 방향을 토의하였다.

This paper reviewed the research on self-sacrificial leadership and suggested future research directions. First, I reviewed the research and theories that pertain to self-sacrifice in the literature of biology and social science, then theoretical works and empirical tests made on self-sacrificial leadership. Specifically reviewed are the concept of self-sacrifice, organization theoretic interpretation of self-sacrifice, occurrence of self-sacrifice in organizational settings and hypotheses on the effects of self-sacrificial leadership and their empirical study results. Finally, future research directions were discussed with respect to theoretical refinements and empirical tests. Specifically discussed are the perspective on organizations as fields of sacrifices, social contagion of motivational decline, and interactionbetween self-sacrifice, organization culture and organizational design.
