The purpose of this study is to provide a theoretical and pedagogical framework for the use of email in teaching English writing. A Vygotskian scaffolding paradigm was employed as an interactive mode in collaboration with native speakers of English in an effort to enhance the English writing competence of Korean students. The concept of zone of proximal development was introduced, and various theoretical underpinnings accompanied with this approach were elaborated with previous language learning studies with sociocultural orientations. Actual email exchange interactions between Korean EFL learners and native speakers of English were observed with an aim of constructing an adequate theoretical and pedagogical basis that can be applied in research and in educational attempts using email as a tool for teaching English for Korean students.
