미술교과에서도 미술 교육이 추구하는 목표인 창의적 · 비판적 사고, 문제 해결 능력 등을 평가할 수 있는 도구가 먼저 정립되어야만 신뢰성을 지닌 참된 평가를 할 수 있을 것이다. 최근에 소개되고 있는 다양한 수행 평가 방법들을 적절히 조합 · 활용하여 평가의 다양화를 시도함으로써 학생을 포괄적으로 이해하기 위한 정보를 수집 · 해석한다면 보다 합리적인 평가가 이루어질 수 있다.
평가에 대한 이러한 이론적인 접근이 현장에서 실천적인 평가 도구로 연결되어야만 현장 교사들이 활용할 수 있다. 선행 연구로서 미술 교과의 특성을 살린 다양한 평가 방법의 가능성을 탐색하고, 활용 가능한 평가 도구의 개발에 목표를 설정하여 초등 3학년 미술과 수행평가 도구 개발에 관련된 결과 보고를 한 바 있으며, 본 연구에서는 계속적으로 초등 4학년 학생들을 대상으로 체계적인 수행평가 도구를 연구, 개발하여 실제 현장에서 이를 응용하여 학생을 보다 효율적으로 지도 · 평가할 수 있는 방안을 제시하는데 그 목적이 있다.

This study was conducted to develop the performance assessment tools for the fourth grade art class in elementary school in Korea. To improve validity and reliability of the grading of art activities, an evaluator's subjective opinion should not be included in the evaluation and it is essential to develop the more rigorous assessment.
The following methods can be used as the performance assessment tools in art class: discourse test and oral test can assess all area in art. Discussion can be used in aesthetic understanding and art appreciation, artwork test and observation should be made not at the end of art making but in the process, interview, self and fellow evaluation report can supplement a teacher's assessment and give students an opportunity of introspection, Report can be made by students about function of art, the relationship of art and environment, media and tools, artist, or art history. Portfolio is one of the typical the performance assessment tools.
This study developed twenty one performance assessment samples to evaluate the fourth graders' art learning abilities in aesthetic understanding, studio art and art appreciation. The sample includes unit title, evaluation method, evaluating purpose, assessing question, grading standards, assessment tool, and sample answer.
