This research project aims to collect comprehensive data on Korean tourism in the 20th century, to investigate each one of them thoroughly, and to build a DB based on these results of analysis. In this regard, three particular goals were set up. The first goal is to gather the original texts, the translations of Japanese materials, the input texts of Korean materials containing the contents about Korean tourism from 1890 to 1945. The second goal is to organize the resources systematically so that the people can make full use of them. The third goal is to contribute to the development and diffusion of tourism contents which is necessary to promote the tourism industry.
In this research, various materials such as books, newspapers, popular magazines, photograph albums, postcards, pamphlets, advertisements were collected synthetically. In order to accomplish this project, the six-stage research method was established; ①to gather the data, ②to pick out the proper data, ③to translate and input the original texts, ④to recollect or enhance the originals, ⑤to extract the primary information and key-words, ⑥to construct the DB. As the result, an extensive DB was constructed containing about 7,000 data.
Below are the tasks by each stage.
In the first stage, with the consistent effort to find unknown materials, a number of precious rare items were obtained.
In the second stage, the list of vast data were arranged and the originals were converted into PDF documents. A lot of manpower worked long hours for this stage, and the four processes are as follows; ①to scan the originals, ②to classify to files by the regional groups, ③to review the contents, ④to name the files consistently. In consequence, the worthy outcome was created.
In the third stage, translation or input of the originals was conducted more than expected. These covered not only bulky books, but also magazine articles, newspapers, pamphlets etc.. Furthermore, the outcomes got more precise by correcting the typos and the awkward parts through researchers’ reading by turns and cross-validation.
In the fourth stage, to recollect or enhance the originals made the results better. If the originals were not in good enough condition to read, the efforts to find another copy from different routes and to improve image quality were carried out.
In the fifth stage, primary information and key-words were organized in a spreadsheet(MS excel format).
In the sixth stage, the DB was designed in order to manage and extend easily, resultingly the high-quality DB could be constructed.
As mentioned above, this research team devoted best efforts to the project for 3 years, and successfully built the DB through establishing the systemic method.
