이 논문은 민중가요에 나타난 ‘여성’의 의미를 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 사회운동의 도구로서 창작되고 향유된 민중가요에는 여성의 이미지가 어떻게 활용되었는지를 살피는 것은 ‘여성’에 대한 사회적 의미를 살피는 것과 다르지 않을 것이다. 본 연구팀의 공동연구로 축적된 민중가요 데이터베이스와 검색용 CD를 활용하여 ‘여성’, ‘여성해방’, ‘사랑’, ‘어머니’ 등의 주제어로 민중가요를 검색하여 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 이 외에도 위의 주제어로 검색되지는 않았으나 여성의 이미지를 활용한 민중가요들도 연구 범위에 포함시켰다. 민중가요가 시위 현장에서 가창된 노래이기 때문에 음악성과 시의적 사건에 대한 고려가 요구되지만 공동 연구주제의 성격상 음악적 분석보다는 사회적 의미와 가사의 내용적 의미에 집중하여 분석하였다.
‘여성’이 사회운동에서 어떤 의미였는지를 시대적 환경과 연결하여 설명하였고 구체적인 민중가요 분석을 통해 여성 이미지의 운용에 대해 살펴보았다. 민중가요에서 여성은 주로 혁명의 보조자로 드러나고 있었으며 시위 현장의 고통이나 혁명의 의지, 학살의 폭력성을 부각시키는 이미지로 주로 활용되고 있었다. 이러한 여성의 이미지는 시대적으로 변화하고 의식적 층위를 탈리하는데 이 논문에서는 그 변화의 양상과 의미에도 주목하고 있다.

The purpose of this article is to examine the significance of the female image in the protest songs. To search the meaning of female in society is exactly alike to know how the female's image was used in the protest songs created and enjoyed by means of a social reform movement. We've investigated the data bank accumulated by our own joint research using the key words from the search program in the CD 'female', 'liberation of females', 'love' and 'mother' in the search for further examination of the main factors of protest songs. Furthermore protest songs applying the female image was not included in the above key words. However it was included in the research. Protest songs were usually sung during demonstrations therefore consideration is needed for the quality of the songs. However the lyrics as well as the social significance within the songs were more concentrated upon and analyzed.
The epoch was linked to 'females' in social movements to explain their significance and we analyzed the application of the female image through concrete research. In the protest songs, female were usually the assistant of revolutions and raised awareness for the massacre, violence and pain caused by demonstrations. The female image undergoes a change through each decade however this article is based more upon the aspect and significance of the change.
