상례와 장례란 인간의 죽음을 둘러싼 사회적으로 규정된 의례 관행의 총체로서, 그 종족이나 문화권이 지니고 있는 인생관, 영혼관, 죽음관 등과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 따라서 상, 장례는 개인적으로 보면 통과 의례의 하나이지만, 동시에 사회적으로는 이를 통해 산자가 죽은 자로 인해 생긴 간극을 메우고 다시 공동체로 통합되는 의례의 일종이다. 이러한 측면에서 본고에서는 체코인들의 전통적인 상, 장례 속에서, 그들의 인생관과 영혼관 그리고 삶과 죽음에 대한 의미를 살펴본다. 특히 전통적인 의식에 초점을 맞추어 체코인들의 장례 문화와 그 속에 내포된 종교적 특성과 이교적 특성을 고찰할 것이며, 이를 기초로 우리나라의 조상 숭배와 체코인들의 조상 숭배의 특성과 그 차이를 비교해본다. 이렇게 상이한 의식은 각 민족의 독특한 역사와 정서를 반영하고 있음을 확인한다.

Funeral customs mean the rituals surrounding the death of a human being and the subsequent disposition of the corpse. Such rites may serve to mark the passage of a person from life into death, to secure the welfare of the dead, to comfort the living, and to protect the living from the dead.
Funeral ceremonies in Czech's cultural traditions have certain features inherited from the period of paganism in which disposition of the corpse, ritual ceremonies are included. But those features have been mixed with religious customs after converting to Christianity from the late 10th century downward.
Since all of these customs derive from a belief that the soul remains in this world for a brief period before departing for the next, the mourners have certain ritual obligations toward the deceased. As traditions have said that the spirit of the deceased was regarded as potentially harmful, people had to try for the spirits not to return and not to harm the living. For these reason people have to keep the various religious and heretical rituals.
In this paper I try to explain the Czech's traditional funeral rites and eremonies through the rites of passage and to compare them with the case of Korea. And finally the differences in rites and worships between two nations derived from the different national consciousness and cultures.
