The purpose of this paper is to offer the basis of research on Korean Festivals to promote more of research on them by surveying the results of the research that have been accomplished so far. This is, therefore, meta-research.
This article includes the research on religious rituals, play, folk art as well as festival. It is because Maeul-good (village feast), unifying play, and traditional performance arts such as Tal-nori (mask dance) or Poongmul-good (Korean traditional instruments feast) are the most important part of Korean festival culture.
When the characteristics of researches are examined on the criterion of time and content, or subject they can be summarized as follows: 1) the period of beginning, 2) the period of expansion of materials, 3) the flourishing period according to time of the researches, and as follows: 1) general consideration, 2) festival and ritual, 3) festival and play, 4) festival and folk art, 5) comparative study, 6) festival and pragmatic study, 7) festival and theory according to content or subject of them.
In conclusion, it suggests the tasks in the future as follows: First, it needs to make a supplementary investigation into traditional festivals. Without being based on the history and culture indigenous to its own community, its re-creation doesn`t long last. Secondly, it needs to find out the new meanings that have been generating on the way of the change of festivals. Thirdly, it needs to make researches into new methodology of Korean festivals through the interdisciplinary study. Fourthly, it needs to be established the theories of Korean festival, which based on Korean history, philosophy and culture.
