The purpose of this paper is to provide some evidence for a CP specifier of cleft constructions in English and to give a uniformed analysis of it-clefts. We demonstrate some problems of previous analyses: dual analyses by Pinkham & Hankamer(1975) and Chomsky(1977), successive cyclic wh-movement, preposing clefted constituents, negation scope, and blinding theory B & C. We show that the CP specifier analysis can give an explanatory adequacy over the previous analyses, providing some evidence that cleft behaves like wh-question. We hope that this paper will be contributed to motivating the futher study of the cleft structure in the Minimalist Program for currrent linguistic theory.
