본 사례 연구는 지도차 산업에서 현대지동차가 기아디도차를 인수함으로써 국내 자동차 시장이 재편되는 과정의 일면을 보여준다. 이 과정에서 기아지동차를 인수하게 죈 배경, 인수 후 구조조정 내용, 그리고 기아지동차가 빠른 시일 내에 경영정상화의 궤도로 진입할 수 있게 되는 요건을 살펴봄으로써 기아자동차의 구조조정이 어떻게 이루어졌는가를 엿볼 수 있다. 기아지동차를 인수함으로써 현대자동차는 규모의 경제, 해외 시장 기반 강화라는 효과를 통해 국재 시강은 불론 해외 시장에서도 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있는 기반을 다지게 되었다.

This case describes the process of integrating Kia Motors by Hyundai Motors after its acquisition in October 1998. It shows the industry background before the acquisition, restructuring activities after the acquisition, and success factors in revitalizing Kia Motors. With Kia Motors as its key division, Hyundai motors could achieve economics of scale and scope as well as broadened global market access. With intensifying global competition in and around Korea, however, Hyundai Motors still faces managerial problems.
