  • 주초록(메인언어)
  • Gerald Vizenor attempts to translate the absent Native American oral culture into literary texts. His recent novel Chancer (2000) embodies his postindian vision to endow the empty and false notion of "the Indian" with vital presence by deinventing and reinventing it. In order to visualize the flexible and dynamic oral culture, Vizenor collapses stabilized boundaries, revealing them as colonists' strategic fabrications. In his text, he randomly mixes the fictional characters of Chancers with both diverse characters of his previous works, Trickster of Liberty Pocahontas, and Ishi. His ambitious endeavor to crumble boundaries among literary texts, fiction, reality, and history, furnishes his text with explosive fertility, stimulating the reader's boundless imagination. However, his intention brings about a paradox. The fictional characters whose characterization is deconstructed, and defined as if they were allegorical figures in the text of Chancers. This counter-deconstructive result from his project to liberate simulacra from their ficture endows us with a challenging task--how to interpret this paradox.
