This article analyzes the leadership style of the three presidents - Rhee Syngman, Park Chung-hee, ad Chun Doo-hwan - by examining how decisions were made, the characteristics of decision-making styles, and personal management methods. In the process of decision-making, Rhee relied on intuition rather that adequate investigation, information, analytical data or group discussion. His rule was characterized by self-righteousness and arbitrary decision without the rational process of collective consideration. Even though Park relied more on his staff and cabinet than Rhee, his decision-making process became more personalized, informal, and individualized, increasingly circumventing any formal decision-making apparatus. Decisions were made arbitrary by Park with the help of a few members within the Blue House and cooperating organizations. The process of decision-making remained uninstitutionalized under Chun regime. Rather than relying upon a systematic analysis of a situation, decision-making was personal, improvised, and hurried. To apply the classification scheme of White and Lippitt, all three president's leadership style is authoritarian, even though they have different characteristics.
