In the late 19th century Britain perceptions about colored races were undergoing significant transformation. The enlightenment and revolutionary tradition of the 18th century emphasized the uniformity of humanity. If some discrepancy was found in the degree of civilization in different nations, it was believed that through education and enlightening work the backward nations could be brought up to the same civilized level of the European nations. In the 19th century, the expansion of industrialism, the prevalence of utilitarianism, and the advent of Darwinism all contributed to the production of less egalitarian views on different races. The degree of industrialization was looked upon as criteria for civilization. Utilitarianism compromised the British forbearance in interfering with the organic wholeness of the native culture, which had been its colonial policy in India in the 18th century, and imposed British institutions for the sake of efficiency. Darwinism, by blurring the clear distinction between humans and animals, relegated some of the colored races to the ambiguous zone between humanity and animality.
Various concepts in racial thought that were prevalent in the 19th century, such as monogenism and polygenism, views on hybridity, and views on the relationship between material civilization and moral culture of a given race, are applied to Conrad’s depiction of his Malay novels to assess his racial perception. The research shows that Conrad's racial views could be categorized as the most progressive and conscientious by the standard of his time. And although Conrad reinscribed some of the prevalent racial views of his time in his fiction, the special fictional devices allow the construction of multiple points of view that balance one another or undermine, detour, and ironize the inscribed view of the prevalent ideology.
