The goal of this thesis is to study how newspaper & magazine influence on the birth of modern novels. This thesis is to argue it on the as fallow three points. Firstly, this thesis is to focus on the relationship between the modern novels & the 'technology' of the media. Secondly, it is to focus on how the modern Korean novels are succeeded to the former novels and influenced by the West, and also to examine this relating to the 'technology' of the media, newspaper & magazine. Thirdly, focusing on what language is written in novel, it is to examine the development of modern Korean novels.
The former researchers suggest that the short story in magazine depicts the interior pursuing the West is the mainstream of modern Korean novels. But the Korean short story restricts to the various aesthetic possibilities getting from the traditional Korean novels. Rather a newspaper toward for popularity than magazine has a potentiality to inherit the traditional Korean novels and to change them into successful modern novels. Traditional Pansori-novel(판소리계 소설) has a vivid spoken language style and the different style of story telling from the West. This traditional novel style is succeeded to Korean modern novels, especially to Shinsoseol(新小說) in a newspaper. But after this Shinsoseol is excluded, and instead of it the short story in the magazine by the intelligent has the main current in the history of the modern Korean novel.
