The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of 'Real-life staged scenery(实景舞台剧)', a growing phenomenon in China, as a new model of 21st century performance arts and as an art industry by evaluating and analyzing its artistic and industrial aspects.
Real-life staged scenery is a new style of performance art which combines some traditional performance arts, visual arts, music, and even cutting-edge science and technology, making it a typical example of fusion art where boundaries between the arts have vanished under the influence of postmodernism, the 21st Century's main cultural phenomenon.
As a model of the art industry combined with capitalism, Real-life staged scenery is connected with cultural marketing and the arts business of China's central and local government and is coupled with the local tourism related economy, brands, and image. Therefore, beyond just a concern of the art world, real-life staged scenery is now an issue in business, culture, and tourism circles as well as for the government.
The biggest difference between real-life staged scenery and other performance arts is stage scenery. By using living components as stage settings, real-life staged scenery makes a unique 'impression', not found in any other performance art. Moreover, the combination of stories and cultures based on the living components on the stage expands real-life staged scenery into more than just a performance; it takes on the characteristics of a play which is the basis of real-life staged scenery. Another artistic feature of the unique performance is the audio-visual effects that are maximized by the use of advanced science and technology.
However, the fundamental element is the community culture. The content of the performance is based on stories about the people, customs, habits, and the environment of the community as well as its history and legends. Of the critical components of real-life staged scenery, the stories about the community can make or break the performance as an art and as a business.
Many real-life staged scenery productions have been successfully industrialized, and at the same time, they have fostered the local tourism industry by fulfilling the needs of cultural tourism, the primary trend of the 21st century's tourism industry. The real-life staged scenery’s industrialization has been promoted by the Chinese government's drive and intervention coupled with the forces of capitalism brought by business and the market.
