The Development of Human Nature Education Program for Young Children Based on the Korean Values and the Multicultural Approach
The purpose of this study was to develop the early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on Korean Values.
The study was constitute with two chapters, one is basic study and the other is development study. And then basic studied was conducted from two viewpoints of literature and field.
The literature studies were done as follows.
The first, the Study on the korean values as an basic for the development of the early childhood character education program was conducted. The results in this study were as follows. First korean values have still had an important impact in our society so reflecting it in the process of developing character education for young children is very important. And then the facts clearly stand forth that confucian values such as royalty(忠), filial piety(孝), virtuous completion(仁), property(禮) were uppermost in korean values and the interpretation of these values could be changed in keeping with modern needs. Finally it was concluded that the reinterpretated the korean values from a modern viewpoint could be melded together with the contents of the character education for young children and actualized. The second, Character Education in Traditional Children’s Education Book 『Dong-Mong-Seon-Seub』was studied. This study analyzes 『Dong-Mong-Seon-Seub』, a unique teaching material for young children that was compiled by a Korean scholar and emphasizes the role of human being as one who lives along with others, so as to discover the significance of character education in today’s society. Third a study of children’s character dducation through examining preceded studies in multicultural education was conducted. this research was the basic study of the development of children’s character education program which has the purpose of discovering its desirable path through examining previous studies of multicultural education. The steps of this analysis were, we first tried to understand the general trend of current multicultural education by looking at 134 numbers of academic papers we found under these following keywords; “Multicultural Children’, ‘Multicultural Education’, and ’Multicultural Character.’ For the next step, we extracted character education related contents from the multicultural education related papers. These were the results of this analysis. First, the purpose and the aim of children’s education were transitioning from assimilationism, and cultural pluralism, to critical multiculturalism, and the contents of current children’s education were mostly related to these following topics: culture, cooperation, children’s characterization, formation, equality, diversity and so forth. Second, the content of children’s character education we find in preceded studies on multicultural education could subdivide into private domain, and public domain. The establishment of one’s character and learning cultural manner were regarded as private domain, and being respectful of others, social conscious and Democracy were regarded as public domain, Third, critical multiculturalism come to the fore in the studies of multicultural education. In conclusion, the research showed that children’s character education needs to go beyond the borders among nations and their cultural barriers, be well aware of the universal value of human rights, and should be practiced to cultivate children with multicultural mind who will create a multicultural society.The forth research on the character education for young children was studied. The purpose of this study was to know the trend of study and to determine out the developmental direction for the character education for young children what sets out the theoretical basis of the early childhood character education program. To achieve this purpose, at first antecedent studies related the character education for young children were selected and we used methods that were an analysis of the literature(dissertation, scholarly journal, university thesis, and others resource) related to the character education for young children. The procedures of this study were as follows. Scholastic identity war revealed. Through the analysis of trends based on the literature, a developed for the research of the character education's objectives, contents, and methods were revealed during discussions. We suggested developmental directions that are divided into three parts. The three parts are the study of the character education for young children practise, research of the character education for young children's themes and contents, and a method of study for the character education for young children. The Fifth the analysis of the children's character related national curriculum of kindergartens. The purpose of the following research was to recognize the children's character related national education of kindergartens that are revised by the demands of the times, through analyzing the national curriculum of kindergartens. The subject of this research was the national curriculums of the kindergartens which the country decides and maintains, examining the 1st kindergarten curriculum to the present 2007 revised curriculum. The analytical criteria and were constructed each according to its criteria and they were as following: 'internal self-identity', 'external self-identity', 'interpersonal relation', 'sense of community', 'nationality', and 'global citizenship'. The children's character related education contents appeared in the all of the national course of study. Also after the 5th course of study, the frequency of the children's character education contents was increased by a significant amount and there were changes in the content.
The Sixth, analysis of child's character education presented in the guiding materials for kindergarten educational activities was studied. The Purpose of this study was to analyze the content of character education presented on the guiding materials for the kindergarten educational activities published on March in 2009. The contents of character Education consisted of 9 categories with 38 subcategories were basic rights including self establishment, self-understanding, basic living ,nation-ethnic, a world citizen, democracy, professional ethic, community life, respect other people. they were analyzed by qualitative methods(frequency and percentage). The result of the study were described in each educational subject and activity type of the guiding materials for the kindergarten education activities. By topic, ‘health and safety’ showed the highest frequency content in the character education . And by activities, ‘group discussion' showed the highest frequency content in the character education.
The field studies were done as follows. The first, a Study on children's understanding of character education for young children was conducted. The second, a study on teachers’ understanding of character education for young children was conducted. The purpose of this study was to explore and analysis teachers' understanding and the status of character education for young children. To achieve this purpose, the subjects were 327 teachers who lived in 6 provinces, Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeonsang-do, Jeolla-do, Cheju-do, and Chungcheong-do, and 4 metropolitan cities, Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan. In this study, a survey research method was used. The questionnaire was consisted of three categories; teachers' understanding, the status of character education, and need to support of character education for young children. The Frequency and percentage and multiple response analysis were applied to analyze the collected data.
The results in this study were as follows: First, early childhood teachers showed the highest level of recognition to the need for character education. Second, teachers were to implement character education for young children. The third, a study on parents' understanding of character education for young Children was conducted. The purpose of this study was to see parents' understanding of character education for young children. To achieve this purpose, the subjects were 441 parents who lived in 5 provinces, Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeonsang-do, Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do, and Jeju-do, and 5 metropolitan cities, Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan. In this study, a survey research method was used. The questionnaire was consisted of three categories; parents' understanding, the status at home, and need to support of character education for young children. The collected data, frequency, percentage and multiple response analysis were applied to analyze the collected data. In order to find out the significant differences between parents' educational backgrounds, income, and residential district. The results in this study were as follow. Parents thought character education for young children was very important. Also, parents seemed to need parents' education for a desirable character education for young children.
The development studied was conducted through two steps.
The first, the study for development of the early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on korean values. So the early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on korean values was developed. The second, the study for application of the early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on korean values was conducted. The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of the early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on Korean Values. The subjects were 49 five-year-old children. The effects of the program were ‘self-concept inventory’ and ‘prosocial behavior’ through pre- & post-test before and after the application of program. In addition, actual class episodes were analyzed. The episodes were derived from the 15 sessions of interaction between teacher and children in character education program with a multicultural approach based on Korean Values. As a result of the study, character education program for young children improved self-concept and prosocial behavior. And children's concepts related to character developed through basic process model of teaching-learning using fairy tales.
The early childhood character education program with a multicultural approach based on korean went through a systematic process to become a final program.
