Assuming that the economic inequality is inappropriate to address contemporary social conflicts, which have been diversified and complicated, our research team focused on the recognition order, which provides economic and cultural foundation at a deeper level. Defining recognition as a broad concept including distribution, not a narrowly-defined concept confined to identity such as sex and race, we suggested that the resolution of multiple divide should be convergent social integration through recovery of the recognition order. Thus, in the middle stage of SSK, we proposed a research project titled “social integration in era of multiple divide,” in which we develop the Better Life Index (BLI), Social Recognition Index (SRI), and Better Society Index, (BSI), a combination of the two. Through this project, our research team planned to diagnose and evaluate the social divide in the Korean society, and present an implementation plan for the convergent social integration. In the large stage, we will prescribe society recovering recognition order to integrity society, based on results of the previous research project, and continue to develop a theoretical foundation on this issue.
Secondly, we will extend BSI and apply it to local governments and Northen-east areas. Specifically, BSI developed from the small and middle stages will be continued to extend as a core project in the large stage. Firstly, centering around the concept of integrity, which has been expanded to apply integration and respect to society, we will adjust and examine the specific index items in BSI. Secondly, we will apply BSI to local governments in the nation and evaluate it, which had been applied only to Seoul’s local government. Lastly, we will present a direction for development and improvement of BSI, by verifying relationship between BSI and other social conditions in local government as well as demographic variables including class, generation, education. To undertake this project, we collaborated with Hankook research to create a fund of 100,000,000 won and will conduct a national survey using 300,000 panel. Also, we will extend the BSI survey to Northen-east asia in collaborating with Peking University, as OECD indicates that there exsit cultural differences in BLI. Our research team will take the international collaboration as a core competence of our research center.
Lastly, we will develop the media collaboration model, which includes proactive introduction and use of new media. We have conducted a research project on Media Fix Model, recognizing that the media present technologies of the forth industrial revolution. The heart of Media Fix Model includes chasing individuals’ recognition, emotion, behavior, and social bonding via media use. Based on results of the previous research, we will extend the model of fix and recovery to a collaboration and harmony model. New media transform users as participants, rather than just delivery to users, as new media are developed and used to strengthen social connection and bond. In this regard, we will develop the concept of reciprocity. Secondly, we will examine the influence of reciprocal social interaction in virtual environments. Thirdly, we will discuss that the game addiction model, which is opposed to the game fix model, has been a fundamental principle in discrimination and exclusion, and will improve the model to reexamine the addiction model prevailed in diverse domains such as video game media.
