본 논문은 시민교육과 미술교육의 연계 지점을 탐색하는 사례 연구를 소개한다. 교사양성대학교 학부생을 대상으로 이루어진 초등미술교재연구 수업에서 4주간에 걸쳐 진행된 수업 사례를 살펴본다. 해당 사례는 시민교육에 대한 이해를 위해 시각이미지에 대한 비평적 탐구 활용 과정과 결과를 보여준다. 시민교육과 시각이미지의 비평적 탐구에 대한 이론적 이해를 바탕으로 진행된 시각이미지 제작 활동을 통해 참여 학부생들은 시민교육과 시각이미지 비평적 탐구의 연계 방식과 이에 대한 교육적 접근을 학습했다. 이를 바탕으로 시민교육과 미술교육을 연계한 초등 현장 미술 수업 운영을 위한 교육적 제언들을 논의해 보았다. 본 사례 연구 결과 첫째, 미술교육의 사회적 역할을 바라보는 도구적 관점을 재해석했다. 둘째, 시각이미지 비평적 탐색 활동의 교육적 이해와 활용 방안을 제안해 보았다. 셋째, 시민교육과 연계한 시각이미지 비평적 탐구 수업의 의의와 시사점을 도출해 보았다. 본 연구 결과가 시민교육을 고민하는 미술교육계 연구자들과 현장 교사들의 연구와 교육 활동에 활용될 수 있기를 바란다.

This study explores how to utilize critical inquiry into visual images to achieve the goal of civic education. To achieve this goal, an experimental teaching program for 4 weeks(total 12 hours) is designed and committed. Participants for this case study inculude undergraduate students joining in an elementary teacher education program specialized in art education at 00 university in South Korea. The process of this program development and the result of this commitment provide us a pedagogical example in which we can continue further implications and questions to adapt this teaching and learning experience for art lessons in elementary schools. This study shows main theoretical background, teaching components, and teaching-learning strategy to bridge the main components of civic education with current art education discourses, particularly, critical inquiry into visual images. Starting form understanding of the basic key concept of civic education and critical inquiry into visual images, this program ends with art making and critic project. Incorporating critical thinking, social engagement and participation, empathy and caring thinking, civil rights and responsibility, this art program aims to see how to bridge between civic education and art education, how to define the value and role of art education integrated with civic education, and how to utilize produced pedagogical implications for the art lessons in elementary schools. The result of this case study shares an example of participants’ completed art work and explanation about the art work. The final critic and discussion about this art project provides the implications of this program and further consideration and questions for further research and teaching in elementary schools.
