Many writers on music has been considered opera as the most representative works by Mozart. As a first step to examine Mozart's operas, this study examined the overtures to those operas.

Mozart's opera overtures can be divided into two groups: those modeled on three-part Italian overtures; and the independent single-movement overtures. These two groups can be chronologically divided rather clearly with 1780 as a watershed year. Such structural change coincides not only with the changes in Mozart's personal circumstances but also the beginning of the social reforms of Emperor Joseph Ⅱ. Changes in Mozart's personal life can be symbolized by leaving his hometown of Salzburg as well as gaining more and more independence from his own father's influence. The next events to show his newly obtained independence were his marriage with Constanze and his membership to the Freemasons.

The existence of those contemporaneous changes, personal as well as social, cannot be denied. The only question is whether such changes coincide with the musical changes. I believe that such is the case, and regard such phenomenon as a necessary precursor for the establishment for the idea of "Absolute music" in the next century.
