This paper analyzes Paradise Regained in terms of Milton's iconoclasm and explores its political implications in the historical context of the pre- and post-Restoration periods. His political activism during this time has been discussed mainly by Marxist and New Historicist Critics. Iconoclasm reinforces and complements their view of Milton's continued political activism. His Iconoclasm is better understood as the reevaluation and defamiliarization of existing fixed images and meaning in various fields. It especially attempts to expose the reified political voice of the post-Restoration period.

Milton has a vision of establishing an ideal political system, even after the failure of the Revolution. So he reexamines the true nature of the kingdom of God and methods for its establishment. In Paradise Regained Satan approaches this based on his own experience and worldly interest and considers monarchical rule to be the most suitable answer to be found on the earth. This attitude represents the political voice of the Royalist group. However, it ignores the dynamic character of the Kingdom of God. Monarchy is not the paradise of this earth but is to be overcome. In this respect Milton demystifies monarchical rule in the post-Restoration period by breaking the voice of Satan.

Milton also reconsiders when the Kingdom of God would appear. Satan believes that the Kingdom should be built immediately. Such a solution is only partial if the time has not truly arrived. Nevertheless, there are strong opinions saying that the Restoration is the very time when the Kingdom has been established. They view the Restoration as fulfilling world history and thus try to end the historical process. But by advocating the continuity of history Milton challenges such an attempt to bring history to a conclusion.

Milton raises the question of authority in connection with his iconoclasm. In this work Satan appropriates political authority, claiming that it comes from the institution itself. However, as Jesus points out, it is rather based on morality and the conclusion of tree debate. Because Satan's appropriation of authority impedes the historical process, it should be destroyed by iconoclastic acts. Under these circumstances, Milton defines himself as an iconoclast. And his iconoclasm offers a model for political intervention even after the Restoration.
