As the need for international communication increases, communicative competence has become a first and foremost goal of language learning. As an effort to enhance the acquisition of communicative skills, computer-mediated communication (CMC) has been actively applied in educational settings. CMC, communication facilitated by the use of computers, has a number of beneficial effects on language learning. For this reason, there have been attempts to integrate CMC software tools (e.g., Daedalus, WebCT, FirstClass, etc.) into foreign language classrooms. However, most of these CMC programs are text-based; they are only useful for developing literacy skills, such as reading and writing. This underscores the need for a CMC software tool that can facilitate the acquisition of communicative skills as well as literacy skills. Onlive Traveller, an innovative CMC software tool for creating a three dimensional virtual learning environment, provides learners opportunities to have live voice communication simultaneously with multi-users. This study reviews theories and practices of CMC in educational settings, explores ways to effectively incorporate CMC programs to language classrooms, and postulates a model for integrating Onlive Traveller into English classrooms. Also, an example of a lesson is presented to show how to establish an electronic environment that can contribute to enhancing communicative skills.
