(Tess of the D'Urbervilles)와 『무명의 주드』(Jude the Obscure)를 통하여 빅토리아조의 성과 종교 담론의 관계가 어떻게 형상화되어 있는가를 여성론적 관점에서 검토해보고자 한다.

This paper examines the relation between Christian culture and sexuality in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure focusing on the 19th-century ideology of female sexuality. Through Tess Hardy explores the Christian view of female sexuality and attempts at a redefinition of feminity. He repeatedly stresses the ways in which Tess’s sexuality is revealed and oppressed. In addition, he transforms the sign of fallen woman in Christian culture through associating female sexuality with nature and paganism. In Jude the Obscure Hardy dramatizes the complex relation between the liberation of woman and the Christian view of female sexuality through Sue’s conflict. Her conflict between the will to creative and independent life and her culture’s encoded messages about female sexuality shows the repressive effect of the Victorian/Christian view of female sexuality. By concentrating on representing Sue’s sexual nature, Hardy reveals the difficulties of living up to the ideal of new woman and the effect of the Christian cultural code of female sexuality. Hardy questions and challenges the Victorian/Christian/middle class code of female sexuality through vividly representing the conflict and the crisis of Tess and Sue. Hardy’s representation of female sexuality in two works has the potential to undermine and transform the ideological work of the major Victorian/Christian discourses on female sexuality.
