  • In the early modern England, the foundations of political and social structures including those of belief systems were radically challenged, and religion was not only as a source but also as an instrument of the changes and the turmoils in English society during that period. Religious discourse was the vocabulary of diverse contestations in the early modern culture in England, and it was religion which rigorously formulated and legalized gender difference. Religious poems by John Donne, George Herbert, John Milton and Aemilia Lanyer record the interior devotions of private religiosity, and at the same time reveals the gendered aspects of self which were religiously internalized by his or her religion. The purpose of this article is to illumine the close relationship between gender and religion in the 17th-century English literature, by explicating the gendered aspects of the relationship between these poets and the gendered deity in their religious poems.
Religious poems by Donne, Herbert, Milton, and Lanyer show that the gender identity of deity, either male or female, is decisively important in the construction of the gender identity of the narrator in their devotional poems, and that the poet's gendered identity also makes a difference in his or her relationship to the gendered deity. Religion in the 17th-century England was strongly patriarchal, and the image of Christian deity was predominantly male. However, the deity is not only male, but also conspicuously or suggestively female in the religious poems by the four poets. Male poets become more feminine in their relation to male deity and accept femaleness as part of their male selves in the process of conversion to God. Female poet, Lanyer, gets more fully aware of her femininity in her relation to male God, and asserts her femaleness as equal to maleness. Religion in their devotional poetry stratifies and at the same time disrupts the traditional hierarchy and formality of gender identities.
