  • This paper aims to examine Thoreau's ecological/environmental thought in Walden from the perspective of deep ecology, which was initiated by Arne Naess, a Norwegian philosopher, in the 1970s in response to the worsening environmental crisis. Naess along with George Sessions proposed eight key points of deep ecology in 1984 among which the following three are central: (1) All life on earth has intrinsic value; (2) Richness and diversity contributes to life's well-being and have value in themselves; (3) Human life is privileged only to the extent of satisfying vital needs. Our reading confirms that Thoreau's ecological imagination was wide as well as prophetic enough to cover all these agendas of the most notable ecological philosophy of today.
A close reading of Walden, which has so far been considered a representative text of transcendentalism, reveals Thoreau's remarkably close intimacy with, and his broad and holistic vision of, the natural community around the Walden pond. His keen observation of nature was motivated by a desire to understand the interrelations among plants, animals, and their habitat. His growing intimacy with the natural community was developed further into the idea that man was part and parcel of the living, rather than inanimate, Earth. His empathetic reverence for nature distinguished himself from his contemporary transcendentalists like Emerson as well as the common people who were driven by rampant commercialism to exploit nature.
Thoreau's ecological vision was also activated by his passion for accurate description of the natural phenomena he saw. He found that man could neither identify the natural phenomena he saw nor could he describe those phenomena without acknowledging the discrepancy between those and what were being described. Therefore, his invigorated dedication to detailing nature was always ridden by his doubt of gaining its whole picture. Walden shows that his meditations on how humankind fits into the natural world lead him to become concerned with the possibilities and limitations of language.
