1. In Korean peninsula at the dawn of modernity, there began interchange of cultures between Korea and Occidental nations. And in this course there were crashes and fusions of those two traditions. But there has been yet no systematic investigation about this course of collisions and fusions between two ethical paradigms. It is regrettable that there has been no such investigation. We tried to correct this intellectual atmosphere, and make a collective study about the ethical paradigm for 21 century Koreans.
2. This study was accomplished during last two years. The subject of first year is to measure the success and failure of the thoughts which tried to solve the problem of fusion of West and East by philosophical method. This study treats the era from the dawn of modernity to the year 1987, the era of the democratic movement. In the process, we analysed and synthesized and estimated the traditional ethics, its comtemporary meaning, and the role of Western and Eastern ethics, their exclusive role(catalysis, distortion, exclusion, domination, dependence), and correlative role(crash, struggle, compromise, modification, fusion). The subject of the second year is to examine the role, relation, solution of problems of the Western and Eastern ethical paradigms since the year 1987, in concentrating the new problems. The aim of this study is to examine the "philosophical positions" which try to make a new ethical paradigm, and to establish "the independent method for the fusion of Eastern and Western ethical paradigms", and, on the base of our dependent methodology, to give a new ethical paradigm as a "social-historical-cultural ontology" which direct the direction of act and criterion of estimation for future Koreans.
3. Our product will be collected to 27 papers, and published to a book. We hope that our study could give a new ethical paradigm for the future Koreans, who want to have a harmonious perspective on ethical problems.
