A Proposal for the Improvement of Korean Studies and Korean Language Lecture Programs in Abroad.
The purpose of this proposal is to provide some suggestions to improve Korean studies and Korean language lecture program in abroad. The current situation is diagnosed as neither very much successful, nor very effectively systematic. Thus the current Korean studies and Korean language lecture programs contain such problems as the lack of primary and secondary study materials, not enough of qualified lecturers are in charge of teaching students.
To fulfill the purpose of this proposal, we had investigated almost all the Korean studies and Korean language lecture programs in the Areas of Asia, Europe, America, Russia and Spanish speaking milieu. This investigation includes Internet informations, e-mail survey, man to man interviews. To come up with a good solution to the current problem of Korean studies and Korean language lecture programs, we compared the successful cases with unsuccessful cases. We, furthermore, analysed the successful samples on the basis of theoretical philosophy as well as on the basis of practical implementation of the theory.
The distinctive successful cases in Asia are the ones in Japan and in China. There are more than 400 universities in Japan, where they provide Korean language lectures. We were informed that there will be another eleven universities that they are going to offer courses in Korean studies and Korean language. The possible assumptions to this type of rapid growth of Korean program in Japan are, first of all, the endless effort of Korean specialists both in Korea and in Japan, secondly, the so called "Korean Boom." The best Japanese universities of Korean programs are Tokyo Foreign Languages University, Kyushyu University, Osaka Foreign Language University.
As far as the China is concerned, there were not much of interests in Korean studies until 1980s. In 1992, however, when Korean government and Chinese government established diplomatic relationships, Chinese universities set up Korean programs in more than 38 universities. We were informed that there will be six more universities that will set up Korean programs. The best universities in China in terms of Korean programs are Peking University, Boktan University, Yenben University.
We found out that there are some other Asian countries where they teach Korean studies as well as Korean language. Vietnam provides the best programs in Korean studies and Korean language. Thanks to the economic growth in Vietnam and the rapid growth of economic trade volume between Vietnam and Korea, the necessity and prosperity of Korean language was increased. Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and Mongol are the other Asian countries where Korean government should pay more attention to improve Korean studies and Korean language lecture programs.
United States of America is the best country in terms of Korean studies and Korean language lecture program in the continent of America. In almost 60 universities they teach Korean language and Korean studies. Such universities as Columbia University, UCLA have very productive programs in Korean language and Korean studies. U.C.-Berkeley, University of Hawaii-Manoa also provide well organized education of Korean language as well as Korean studies.
In Canada, University of Toronto has started educating students to Korean language and Korean studies. University of British Columbia, however, is the most active and progressive in training Korean specialist in Canada.
The point should be made to improve Korean studies and Korean language lecture program in America is that somehow or another the diversity of Korean studies ought to be acquired. Most of the universities in America provide lectures of Korean language and Korean studies on the basis of what kind of and how many professors do they have. To solve this problem, the exchange program between Korean professors and American professors might be helpful.
