Common characteristics of Korean people's political ideologies in the US during Japanese colonial period are individualism, liberalism, Christianity, and democracy. In general, they were antagonistic against socialism except Ahn Chang-ho. For them America was a country for freedom, democracy, prosperity and Christianity, so they strongly inclined toward American-style liberal democracy. One can say, because of their influence, a movement for integrating rightists and leftists was failed. Korean people who studied in the US were influenced by anti-communistic atmosphere after World War I. And they were the one who built Republic of Korea and its spirit.
Korean leaders of independence movement in the US had been generally reformist intellectuals and Christians before the Japanese annexation of Korea. After the annexation, they divided into supporters for Ahn Chang-ho who generally lived in northwest region in Korea and supporters for Syngman Rhee who lived in Kyonggi area. They were the ones who formed two big forces in Korean society in the US. Although both Ahn and Rhee were leaders of Korean society in the US, they thought and behaved differently toward socialism. Ahn declared the third ideology which took merits from both capitalism and socialism, which affected other people like Cho So-ang and Ahn Jae-hong who developed their middle-of-the-road nationalism. On the contrary, Syngman Rhee strongly opposed socialism. But his anti-socialism was not from his belief in liberal democracy but from his deliberation to hold real power.
