인과적 속성의 본성은 현대 형이상학의 매우 논쟁적인 주제 중 하나이다. 이 논문에서 나는 최근 형이상학자들에 의하여 충분한 주의가 기울여지지 않은 성향적 속성의 한 측면에 주목할 것이다. 먼저 나는 인과적 과정에 대한 새먼의 표지 이론을 발전시키기 위하여 우리가 어떤 짜집기된 세계선들이 성향을 갖거나 갖지 않는다는 것이 무엇인지 명확히 할 필요하가 있다는 것을 논증할 것이다. 그리고 나서, 나는 순간적인 성향 귀속과 지속된 성향 귀속을 구분할 것이다. 이와 관련 나의 첫 번째 핵심 주장은 순간적인 성향 귀속은 통시간적 동일성에 의하여 분석되어야 한다는 것이다.그리고, 나는 순간적인 성향 귀속과 다른 방식으로 분석될 필요가 있는 지속된 성향 귀속이 존재한다고 믿고 있다. 구체적으로 나는 통시간적 동일성 개념에 호소하지 않으면서 반사실적 조건문을 통하여 해명되어야 할 지속된 성향 귀속이 존재한다는 것을 논증할 것이다.

The nature of dispositional properties has been one of the controversial topics in the contemporary metaphysics. In this paper, I will bring into focus an aspect of dispositional properties to which enough attention has not been paid by contemporary metaphysicians. In the first place, I will argue that in order to elucidate Salmon’s mark theory of causal process, we need to make sense of what it is for gerrymandered objects to have or not to have dispositional properties. And then I will make a distinction between ephemeral and extended-in-time dispositional ascriptions. The first key claim I will make is that ephemeral dispositional ascriptions must be analyzed in terms of the concept of identity over time. But I think that there are some extended-in-time dispositional ascriptions that need to be treated differently from ephemeral dispositional ascriptions. To be specific, I will argue that there are some extended-in-time dispositional ascriptions that we should cash out in terms of counterfactual conditionals without invoking the concept of identity over time.

본 연구의 성과가 갖는 일차적인 기대효과는 학술적인 것이다. 본 연구를 통하여 우리는 통시간적 동일성, 인과적 과정, 인과 관계, 속성, 반사실적 조건문과 같은 다양한 형이상학적 개념들이 어떤 방식으로 서로 연관되어 있는지에 대한 한층 명확한 이해를 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 특히 현재까지 비교적 무관하게 진행되어 오던 성향에 대한 철학적 논의와 인과에 대한 철학적 논의 사이에 밀접한 연결점이 있다는 것이 드러날 것이다. 본 연구자는 향후 이러한 연구 성과에 근거하여 보다 체계적이고 종합적인 형이상학으로 나아갈 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 다음으로 본 연구는 인과성에 대한 보존량 이론을 한층 희망적인 것으로 만듦으로써 인과성에 대한 후속 논의의 방향을 결정함에 있어서 중요한 지침을 제공해 줄 것이다. 그리고, 이는 인과성이 사변적인 철학의 유서 깊은 문제로 머물러 있지 않고, 보존량이나 보존 법칙과 같은 현대 과학의 개념들을 통하여 주제적으로 논의될 수 있다는 것을 보여줄 것이다.
