The Theatre Reform Theory and Narrative Literature, and The Discourse of Nation State in 1900's in Korea
The theatre reform theory of Korea in 1900's was influenced by the theatre reform theory of Japan in Japanese Meiji period. Of course, there were some important differences between the theatre reform theories of two countries at that time in the context and background. However, the common features of them were to make the images of modern civilized state through the theatre reform.
In Korea, the nationalist intellectuals, including Shin Chae-ho and Park Eun-sik, those who most of them worked for the nationalist newspapers as a journalist, constantly claimed the theatre reform to the leaders of theatre. At that time, one of theatre leaders was Yi In-jik, a novelist who wrote several famous novels as like <a tear of the blood>, <silver world>, and a politician who was a follower of Yi Wan-yong, a prime minster of the Imperial Korea. The nationalist intellectuals made an attack pro-Japanese politician's theatre movement, and requested to perform theatre for improving the nation spirit. In order to these purpose, they proposed theatre of the nation narrative which deal with the national heroes and loyalists as like Eulji Munduck, Yeongae Somun, Choi Young, Yi Sun-sin, and so on. They actually wrote fictional biography works which dealt with those characters. For example, Shin Chae-ho wrote several fictional biography works as like <Eulji Munduck>, <Choi Young>, <Yi Sun-sin>. Therefore, the nationalist intellectuals intended to build nation state through the theatre reform and fictional biography in 1900's.
