70년대 페미니즘 담론은 남성 지배적 패러다임이 오인임을 폭로하고 그것을 새로운 패러다임으로 대체하고자 한다. 소집단에서 개인적 경험을 이야기 한 후 그것을 페미니스트적인 관점에서 분석하는 의식고양을 거친다. 이들은 상징폭력이 강요하는 여성성의 기준에 의문을 제기하는 가운데 우선 상징폭력의 정당성을 부인하고 나아가 새로운 저항 담론을 제시한다.『작은 변화들』(Small Changes)은 피어시(Piercy)의 페미니스트 의식, 특히 의식고양의 중요성을 잘 보여주는 소설이다. 1960년대 후반에서 1970년대 초에 이르는 시기에 젊은 여성들이 겪은 변화에 집중하고 있는 이 소설은 당대 페미니즘에 영향을 받은 동시에 페미니스트적 의식을 고양시키는 데 기여했다.『작은 변화들』은 상징폭력에 공모하는 여성과 의식고양을 통해 대안적 삶을 모색하는 대조적인 두 여주인공을 등장시킴으로서 상징폭력의 공고함과 동시에 그에 대한 저항의 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 미리엄은 파격적인 성 관계에도 불구하고 자발적으로 상징폭력에 공모하는 모습을 보인다.반면 또 한 여주인공인 베쓰는 남성지배에 정면으로 대결하여 새로운 공동체인 여성 코뮨을 창조하고. 궁극적으로 이성애적 관계의 틀을 벗어나 동성애 가족을 선택한다. 그러나 피어시가 이상적 삶의 방식으로 제시하고 있는 동성애 가족은 한계를 지니고 있다. 이들은 범죄자가 되며 사회로부터 분리될 수밖에 없는데 이것은 작가가 동성애가족과 사회를 통합시킬 실마리를 찾지 못함을 보여준다.

This article examines Marge Piercy's Small Changes in terms of Bourdieu's symbolic violence and consciousness-raising of 70s' feminists. Symbolic violence builds on the binary logic and ultimately connects a more fundamental polarity: the dominant/dominated paired opposition. The vertical classification of male/female becomes internalized into the cognitive structure of women, who, in turn, reproduce male domination. Consciousness-raising begins with the unmasking of symbolic violence that legitimize and hide male domination. Small Change is an attempt to produce in fiction an equivalent of a full experience in a consciousness-raising group. Piercy takes pains with her story to show us how feminity is socially constructed: how gender socialization is the process through which women internalize male domination. While traditional novel shows life patterns resolved by marriage, this novel subverts these patterns.
