Our study「A contrastive study of linguistic behaviors between Korean and Japanese reflected in the accommodation of each culture」is a contrastive study which we deeply analyzed and closely examined the accommodation of culture, and the relation of both country between Korea and Japan through recent dramas that was on the air in Korea and Japan. Especially we would like to find the feature of linguistic behaviors between Korea and Japan, studying linguistic and non-linguistic behaviors between Korean and Japanese in the dramas, moreover, we'd like to conclude concrete case regarding cross-cultural communication between Korea and Japan.
At first, we researched and analyzed the reaction of anger that caused by non linguistic behaviors among feeling expression between Korean and Japanese. The result of study is that the response of anger between Korea and Japan was almost equal, however the methods of the feeling expressions are obviously different. Korean usually use eye contact and violence for the methods of the feeling expression. However Japanese usually used the way of talking, face looks, and silence for that. Additionally both Korean and Japanese equally used a voice, a gesture and tears for the negative response of the anger.
Secondly, we researched and analyzed a part of speech in the preference and the actual use of the vocabulary. The result is that there are more vocabularies in relation with noun and verb in Korean than in Japan. However, there are more vocabularies in relation with adjective and exclamation in Japanese. We think that this result reflected the actual use of the language in the real life between Korea and Japan, because the vocabulary in the dramas reflect the vocabulary of the real life.
Thirdly, the common point deciding honorific act through awareness toward the person between in Korea and Japan is the consideration of the dialog situation, high and low in the company, the official and the personal, more or less of the participants in dialog. However, Korean put more advantage in honorific act, especially the age, than in the psychological decision of speakers. And moreover, it does not matter which class a person in when people talk about the person in Korea. Japanese put more advantage in the power of business relation, the role relation, and direct-indirect conversation, and they give priority to the care and decision toward the psychological distance of hearer. And they also give a care for hearer, though they think the character in conversation is important.
Fourthly, we contrasted positive expression with negative expression between Korean and Japanese regarding indication-order expression in behavior expression. Positive indication-order expression in Japanese appears same meaning in Korean. So negative one does. However, in Japanese euphemistic expression such as condition expression is used, instead of prohibition and order expression, in Korean, this kind of thing does not appear because Korean obviously distinguish positive expression from negative expression.
Fifthly, we researched and analyzed turn-taking, quantity of utterance and back channel in dramas of Korea and Japan in order to find a characteristic and appearance of behavior in the dialog between Korean and Japanese. The result is that Korean were very active as a speaker, so that they clearly assert their own opinion. And they strongly tend to complete the dialog distinguishing speaker from hearer. However, Japanese were very active as a hearer, so that they support the dialog in order for it to go through smoothly. And they tend to complete the dialog in cooperation with participants.
Consequently, we could find lots of difference in linguistic and non-linguistic behavior between Korean and Japanese, and clarify each feature.
