<Abstract(內容提要)>
This paper aims to assess the Step of the Chinese Tie kuai-Li(鐵拐李) in the Korean Sandaenori. Especially I focus that why only Tie kuai-Li - one of the Eight Immortals is accepted by the Korean masque dance. Li Tie Kuai - the master with the Iron Crutch 鐵拐 offers a striking contrast to the other members of the group. Hideous, hairy, deformed, and scantily clad in filthy rags, he is the type of that repulsive legion preying upon a long-suffering public, which is moved to the giving of alms not so much by pity as by feelings of horror and fear.
In this essay, I try to illuminate the Step of Tie kuai-Li as religious incantation for expelling the Mongolian enemy from China in the Yuan dynasty. the Step of Tie kuai-Li characterized by a grotesque appearance and maimed person have not so much a simple step as primitive and mythological symbol implication. Under this research, I am finding it in two bearings; the one is a Step of 'moderation' in the Confucian interpretations, the other is of 'incantation' in the Taoist interpretations. Above all, the Taoism has positive appropriations about this step. That is the hopping Steps of Yu(禹) like taking wings and of Chi(夔) with a clap of thunder. so an occult Step of Yu(禹) and Chi(夔) was inherited and developed by a crippled, the Iron Crutch Li in the late Taoism. Therefore, the Step of Iron Crutch Li was accepted and enjoyed as an occult symbol of exorcism in the Korean Sandaenori driving the devil away.
In conclusion, I focus that why this step has immortal liveliness from Yu(禹) and Chi(夔) to the Iron Crutch Li. In other words, Chi(夔) with the rolling of thunder frightens the whole world. That is, Chi(夔)'s act with one foot, Tie kuai-Li walks leaning the Iron Crutch because of a crippled. The power of step leaning the Iron Crutch increase manifold of normal person's step. It becomes in the course of nature trampling step with a the Iron Crutch. It is connected with the rite of exorcism driving human hardships and wickedness away. The rite of exorcism with ear-splitting sound is a broad appearance as 'hopping', 'trampling', 'striking' and suchlike in the Chinese Nuo play. The Korean folk plays inclusive of Sandaenori and a performance of exorcism in shamanism were in collusion with this. I can answer my question why only Tie kuai-Li - one of the Eight Immortals is accepted by the Korean masque dance. In consequence, from abnormal 'step' with a clap of thunder, that is to say, we can find that the essential structure with incantation and exorcism of Tie kuai dance has timeless signification.
