Studies have shown that children of alcoholics are at risk of various negative outcomes in terms of social and psychological malfunctioning. Among these undesirable outcomes, the least investigated is likely to be the impact of parental alcoholism on eating disorders of children. The focus of the present study is to examine the prevalence of disordered eating behaviors among the children of alcoholic parents, and to identify protective factors that mitigate such behaviors.
The sample consisted of 1162 female teenagers for grade 7 to 12 living in Seoul. The self- reported disordered eating behaviors of the teenagers of alcoholic parents were assessed. Other variables such as drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, problem solving skills, attachment with mothers, experience of worry about being sexually forced and demographic factors(grade, living with biological parents, perception of parental drinking problems, religion, subjective economic condition)were also investigated.
As a result, students with alcoholic parents differed significantly from the students with non-alcoholic parents with regard to the items of the eating disorder scale used in the study, including self-evaluation of binge eating, non-stop eating, number of attempts of dieting during last 1 year, use of diuretics.
Logit regression was conducted to identify the factors that differentiated those who reported disordered eating behaviors from those who did not. Six variables in the model were used to differentiate between the two groups. In conclusion, it have shown that the respondents are likely to have distorted eating behaviors if they have high derive for thinness, low level of body dissatisfaction, higher problem solving skill, lower attachment with mother, and experience of have experience of worry about being sexually forced.
Distorted eating behaviors among teenage girls are very common and it is anticipated predictable social problem. Appropriate intervention periods needed to be reviewed to solve mental health problems in the community. It seems that community mental health centers or school settings are proper intervention for prevention.
