본고에서는 이성적이고 자율적인 근대의 주체라는 신화가 타자의 억압으로 이어진 실제 역사를 비판할 뿐 아니라 주체가 분열되고 복제되는 수많은 예에서 보듯이 객관적으로 존재하기 어려운 허구임을 밝힌다. 푸꼬는 근대적 주체가 훈육을 통해 구성되었다는 점을 밝힘으로써 근대의 계몽주의적이고 자유주의적인 주체 개념을 비판하였다. 디킨즈는 데까르트식의 근대적 주체를 회의한다는 점에서는 푸꼬와 공통점이 있으나, 푸꼬식의 "주체의 죽음" 논의에 빠지는 대신에 진정한 개성과 책임을 담보하는 새로운 주체를 모색한다는 데 창조적 작가로서 그의 장점이 있다. 본고에서는 디킨즈가 모색하는 새로운 주체가 블레이크와 리비스가 중시하는 '열린 자아'(identity)와 유사하다는 사실을 <리틀 도릿>의 주인공인 아서 클레넘을 중심으로 밝힌다. 요약하자면 디킨즈는 특정 개인이나 특정 세력에게 책임을 물을 수 있게 유도하는 데까르트 이래의 주체관에 대한 회의를 에돌림청이 대표하는 권력 형태와 관련하여 제시하는 한편, 에돌림청의 행태가 ‘예견’하는 푸꼬식의 관점에 대해서도 자기 결정에 대한 책임을 지는 클레넘의 모습을 통해 유보적으로 평가하는 것이다. 근대가 낳았고 근대사회를 주도하는 인간형, 즉 근대적 주체에 대한 회의를 오늘날의 이론가 이상으로 보여주면서도 주체의 죽음 운운하는 언설에 빠지지 않고 새로운 주체상을 모색하는 작가라는 점이 근대를 대표하는 소설가로서 디킨즈의 위대성을 구성하는 주요한 측면이라고 하겠다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the split and duplication of the modern subjectivity in Dickens's later works like <Little Dorrit>, which come from the basic nature of the capitalist economy. Both split characters such as Pancks or Merdle and duplicated ones such as the Barnacles or Mrs General witness the groundlessness of the solid, rational, and autonomous subject which comprises the core of the modern liberal subject. Foucault's notion of discipline and power also exposes the brittleness of the enlightened liberal subject, but according to him, nobody is responsible for disorders and disasters by the Circumlocution Office or the investment failure in Merdle. Arthur Clennam, protagonist of <Little Dorrit>, appears to embody the criticism and reflection on Foucault's idea, in that he acknowledges a portion of responsibility for the investment failure. In conclusion, he seems to carry Dickens's notion of the new subjectivity which admits the individual freedom and responsibility as well.
