"A Study on the Japanese Imaginary Geographical Cultural-Strata with respect to the ‘Edo & Tokyo's Representation"
This study, the research on the Japanese imaginary geographical cultural-Strata to the ‘Edo & Tokyo's Representation, is aimed at analyzing the Japanese imaginary geographical cultural-Strata to the ‘Edo & Tokyo's Representation expressed in the literal texts based on the curriculum viewpoint of the Study of Japanese Literatures and the Study of the Japanese Thoughts History since the age of modern time, and establishing the data base for the research. The study is designed to understand the images of Edo and Tokyo, the largest cities representing Japan up to now since the modern times in the time coordinate of the cultural history, and at the same time to analyze the details of them, based on the proof through the literal texts.
Based on the findings from the research, the formation process of the Japanese mental images and its trends will be examined in the end. The notion of the mental images, borrowed to use here, means the mechanism of the experiences, memories, thoughts and thinking related to the inner side of human beings, which can be separated from the geographical and regional study viewpoints of the preceding research. The study will go further from the notion of the mental images, which occurs with neither sensitive nor conscientious experience, and reorganize and understand the feelings and thought already experienced and stored in the memory as the concept that a space is equal to a place.
The study will be conducted through the stages following (1) the chronological vacancies cut off from the preceding researches will be filled through the understanding of the sequential time flow, linked to the far modern times – modern times – contemporary times based on the consistent coordinate of time. (2) Through the introduction of the concept, "mental images’ together with the space and geography mentioned above, the diverse analysis from the various angles will be tried for the Japanese culture and literatures. (3) The study will have a look into the various times such as the far modern times – modern times – contemporary times throughout all the times, and in order to put the area of the literatures in the research, it will keep the research frame involving not only the specialists on the literatures but also the specialists majoring such areas as, the history of the Japanese thoughts, the history of the society and the history of comparative cultures. (4) Based on the joint researches mentioned above, finally, the basis of the Japanese images and geographical culture theory, which are seen through the images of Edo and Tokyo since the far modern times, will be analyzed on the basis of the proof, and the basic data from the research will be stored. (5) And on the basis of the research results, the necessity of the research on the Korea-Seoul’s images and geographical study, linked to Hanyang-Hansung- Kyungsung-Seoul will be proposed. (6) A new paradigm for the theory of the comparative cultural study of Korea and Japan will be established.
