The aim of this research is to find the characteristics of children's songs in modern period(1920-30s). For the first year this research tried to find and classify thousand of songs of those period in books, newspapers and magazines. I could discover new, talented songwriters like Han Jung-Dong,Seo Duk-Chul, Yoon Bok-Jin, Sin Go-Song besides the famous composer Hong Nan-Pa, also famous Yoon Suk-Joog. I also found a lot of critical review and article about children and children's songs like "How to create children's song which they themselves love". I coud verify how people in those perod thought about the children and children's songs. For the second and third year, this research tried to find the the characteristics of children's songs in modern period(1920-30s). So, I wrote three thesis.
The first one is about the image of 'sister' in children's songs in those period. I found that 'sister' image of children's song is 1) imane of usual life: sister who took care of her little brothers, got married and left home, never came back. 2) image of criticizing the reality: sister who worked in the factory for their family 3) image of youth: sister who is young and beatiful. Those images represent the agony of Japanese colonial period though the simple and innocent mind of children.
The second one is about the differences between the magazines 'So-Nyun'(young boys) and 'Euorini'(chidren). These magazines were known as the begining of the children's literature during the period from 1910 to the early 1920s. This study verified the differences 1) as the conception, 'So-Nyun' means the young and new generation who was responsible to their country. 'Euorini" means the child who entered the elementary school. 2) as the literature, 'So-Nyun' lists the story which could enlighten and educate the young boys, 'Euorini' lists the story and poems which could excite the children. 3) as the background, 'So-Nyun'has the confucious root and meanings but 'Eourini' has the root of 'Cheondo' religion, and affected by Japanese children's literature.
The third thesis is to find how many famous children's song of thd modern period are existed in the elementary school's textbook of music, and why they can be recepted in it. A lot of famous children's songs are composed in that period(1920-30s) not in the present times. I found that the children's songs of the modern period(1920-30s) are the most in the elementary school's textbook of music through the first grade to the sixth grade from 1945 to 1990. Especially 'The spring of hometown''To the front, to the future''With splash after splash''An icicle''A harmonica made by corn''Snowflake like blossom''The wind from the mountain, the wind from the river''The rainbow''A half-moon' are the best, most songs than ever in the elementary school's textbook of music. To take those songs in the elementary school's textbook of music, 1) they chose the subject like nature, animal, season, flower and they prefer the bright side of the life to the miserable aspect of the Japanese colonial period. 2) they left the moral songs out because they seemed anachronic. 3) they collected the wrong word and grammar and made the long song short. These changes mean that the person in charge thought that the children's songs in the elementary school's textbook of music had to be childlike, innocent, jolly and cute. And that is the common phrase what the grown-up thought the children's mind.
