본 연구는 디킨즈의 『막대한 유산』을 근대적 주체와 그에 대한 탈식민주의적 비판이라는 관점에서 다시 읽으려는 시도이다. 우리는 근대적 주체에 대한 두 가지 관점을 확인할 수 있는 바, 하나는 자유주의적이고 휴머니즘적인 관점이고 다른 하나는 탈구조주의적 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 전자는 주체의 자율성과 자립성을 신봉하는 입장이고 후자는 주체의 구성성과 환경의 결정성을 강조하는 입장이다. 핍의 진정한 발전과 성숙의 면면은 두 관점이 지닌 문제점을 증언하는데, 그는 서구 근대가 산출할 수 있는 최상의 주체에 근접한다고 할 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 이러한 핍이라도 서구 근대가 주도면밀하게 억압하고 배제한 '타자'의 고통을 해결할 수 없다는 점에서 '지구적' 주체의 필요성이 부각된다. 케어리의 『잭 맥스』는 디킨즈의 『막대한 유산』 을 탈식민주의의 관점에서 다시 읽고자 하는 시도를 보여준다. 이 작품에서 케어리는 식민모국의 범죄성과 비열성을 디킨즈보다 더욱 구체적으로 비판하지만 케어리의 시각이 디킨즈의 시각과 본질적인 차이를 지닌다고 할 수는 없을 듯하다. 이는 『잭 맥스』에 오스트레일리아 원주민의 시선이 부재한다는 점에 의해 확인되는 바, '타자'에 대한 그의 관심은 피식민지의 원주민에게는 해당하지 않는 것이다. 디킨즈의 『막대한 유산』과 케어리의 『잭 맥스』를 비교한 결과, 근대의 성취를 무조건 폄하하기보다 이를 객관적으로 평가하는 일이 필요하다는 사실과 진정한 탈근대를 모색하는 일이 시급하다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine Dickens's <Great Expectations> from the standpoint of the modern subject and its postcolonial criticism. We can identify two typical views of the modern subject: one is the liberal humanist view and the other is the poststructuralist view. Each one highlights the autonomy and independence of the self and its constructedness respectively. Pip's genuine development and growth, however, witnesses the brittleness of both these views. Pip might be said to comprise, in a sense, the 'best' modern subject, but definitely he cannot meet such problems as the suffering of 'the other' whom the modern history deliberately excludes and represses. Hence the necessity of the so-called 'global' subject. Carey's <Jack Maggs> comes under a postcolonial attempt to read Dickens's <Great Expectations>. He throws light on the criminality and meanness of the British society more ruthlessly than Dickens. Yet his criticism of the English snobbery doesn't make a qualitative difference, which is established by the total absence of an Australian Aborigine in <Jack Maggs>. Carey's interest in the Western other turns out not to extend its hand to the native Australian. Our hitherto comparison of Dickens's work with its postcolonial reading seems to request an objective appraisal of the modern achievement and an urgent demand for the true postmodernity.
