그간 영문학계의 탈식민 논의는 영국 식민주의와 관련된 것이 대부분이었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 영국이 세계 곳곳에 가장 많은 식민지를 거느렸던 대표적인 식민주의/제국주의 국가였기에 이러한 현상은 불가피한 것이었다. 그런데 주목해야 할 것은 이제는, 아니 벌써부터 영국이 아니라 미국이 식민주의의 주체가 되어 있다는 사실이다. 베트남전쟁, 걸프전쟁, 이라크전쟁 등에서 볼 수 있듯이, 일련의 굵직한 전쟁들은 미국의 주도 하에 벌어졌으며, 탈식민 논의 자체도 미국을 거론하지 않고서는 공허한 것이 될 정도로 미국은 식민주의 논의의 중심에 서 있다. 이러한 맥락에서 쿳시(J.M. Coetzee, 1940- )의 소설과 미국 식민주의/제국주의의 상호적 관계를 논하는 것도 나름대로 의미가 있을 듯하다. 그가 식민주의/제국주의에 관한 담론을 일관되게 전개하면서, 일정 부분을 미국의 식민주의/제국주의에 할애해 왔기 때문에 특히 그러하다.
쿳시의 작품을 대할 때 염두에 둬야 할 것 중 하나는 그가 남아프리카의 식민 상황을 남아프리카만의 특수한 예로 생각하지 않고 "식민주의, 후기 식민주의, 신新식민주의와 관련된 더 넓은 역사적 상황의 한 예"(Watson 23)라고 생각하고 그러한 생각을 그의 소설 곳곳에 투영해왔다는 사실이다. 남아프리카의 식민지 역사가 아무리 비극적이고 파란만장한 것이긴 해도, 세계의 도처에 산재해 있는 억압과 수탈이라는 "더 넓은 역사적 상황"에서 보면 예외적인 것이 아니라는 말이다. 이는 남아프리카의 식민주의 역사가 중요하지 않다는 말이 아니라, 그것을 세계사적인 시각에서 폭넓게 파악할 필요가 있다는 말이다. 이런 맥락에서 쿳시의 첫 소설 『어둠의 땅ꡕ(Dusklands)은 주목할 필요가 있다. 『어둠의 땅」에 수록된 두 편의 소설들 「베트남 프로젝트」와 「야코부스 쿳시의 이야기」가 식민주의의 문제를 세계사적인 시각에서 파악하려는 작가의 소신과 역사관을 보여주고 있기에 더욱 그렇다. 특히 남아프리카의 식민주의가 아니라 베트남 전쟁과 관련된 미국의 식민주의 문제를 형상화하고 있는 「베트남 프로젝트」가 그렇다.
따라서 본 연구는 쿳시의 첫 소설에 나타난 "폭력의 형이상학"과 미국의 식민주의/제국주의의 문제를 연계시켜 논하는 데 그 목적이 있다.

One has to bear in mind, however, that Coetzee tends to "see the South African situation as only one manifestation of a wider historical situation to do with colonialism, late colonialism, neo-colonialism." In other words, putting too much emphasis on South African contexts may diminish or undermine significance of Coetzee's multi-layered novels. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to highlight what Coetzee has to say about American colonialism/imperialism and to emphasize importance of "postcolonial rhetoric of simultaneity" which is repeatedly shown in his fictional works, It gives a meticulous attention to and analyzes "Vietnam Project," the first novella of Dusklands, Coetzee's very first novel, which depicts and characterizes "what Chomsky in the context of Vietnam [War] called 'the backroom boys.'" "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," "When a Woman Grows Older," and Diary of a Bad Year are occasionally brought into discussion as well. This kind of study seems timely and pertinent especially when we take into account rampant American imperialism which has devastated and almost traumatized the world.

본 연구는 남아프리카 식민주의에 국한되어 행해지는 쿳시 소설에 대한 기존 연구의 방향을 미국의 식민주의/제국주의와 관련시켜 논하는 연구이다. 식민주의/제국주의의 향방이 현재 급속도로 미국 쪽으로 넘어가고 있다는 현실을 감안하면, 본 연구는 시의적절한 것으로써 쿳시에 대한 앞으로의 논의에 일조할 수 있는 것일 수 있다고 판단된다. 본 연구자는 이 연구를 강의에 적극 활용함은 물론, 이를 시발점으로 해서 쿳시에 관한 연구서를 집필하는 계기로 삼으려고 한다. 쿳시의 소설 중 가장 어려운 것 중 하나인 Dusklands를 논의하여 쿳시에 관한 논의를 활성화시키는 계기도 될 수 있을 듯싶다.
