본 연구는 현재까지도 많은 논란과 이견을 야기하고 있는 현대 미국 시인, 크레인(Hart Crane)의 대표적 서사시 [다리](The Bridge)를 살펴보면서 미국 모더니스트 서사시 형성 문제를 다루려한다. 크레인은 여타 모더니스트들보다 더 장르 연구에서 소외되어 왔으며, 여기에는 기존 크레인 연구의 한계 외에도 그의 시가 ‘미국’이라는 단일 국가를 다루고 있는 관계로 초국가적 면모를 지닌 대표적 모더니스트 서사시와는 거리가 있다는 점도 한 이유라 할 수 있다. 또한 크레인은 모더니즘과 인접 사조 간의 접합 지점에 위치한 시인으로서, 낭만주의와 모더니즘의 양면성과 혼합적 성격을 드러내면서 순수하게 그 특징을 추출하기 힘들다는 점 역시 그의 서사시 연구를 어렵게 만드는 요인이 되어 왔다. 그러나 인접사조와의 융합은 서사시의 혼종성(hybrid)과 전환기로서의 모더니즘에 대한 예로 해석할 수 있고, 미국은 대표적인 자본주의 시장으로서 오히려 더 흥미로운 서사시의 배경이 될 수 있다. 헤겔(G.W.F. Hegel)은 일찍이 미국이 "무한히 뻗어나가는 시장"(1062)의 생생한 예로서 미래의 서사시 배경이 될 것이라고 예언했으며, 이런 면에서 미국은 이미 단순한 국가라기보다 자본주의를 대표하는 현대적 공간이라 할 수 있기 때문이다.
이런 면에서 본 논문은 크레인의 [다리]를 읽으면서 기존 모더니즘 비평의 한계를 지양한 새로운 독법으로서 장르적 접근을 시도하려 한다. 서사시 장르 형성 문제는 크레인 연구가 간과하고 있던 부분이자 기존 비평의 일면적이고도 제한된 시각을 광정해줄 수 있는 지점이다. 또한 모더니스트 시인이 어떻게 역사와 현실을 언어와 미적 형식으로 수용하고 변형시키는지 그 과정을 보여준다는 점에서 여타의 해석들과는 차별되는 접근이기도 하다. 장르 연구는 최근 모더니즘 논의가 빠져있는 과도한 이론에의 경도, 그 일면성과 편협성을 광정해줄 수 있는 ‘총체적’ 관점을 보유하고 있다는 점에서 서사시 텍스트에 걸맞는 방법론이라 할 수 있으며, 이런 면에서 본 논문은 장르 형성이라는 매개 지점을 중심으로 모더니즘과 서사시 논의를 집중적으로 살피고, 부분적·파편적으로 이뤄졌던 기존 논의들을 우리의 현재적 관심 속에 새롭게 종합하고자 한다.

Hart Crane, representative American modernist, resists and re-forms social modernity in a textual realm of the epic literary tradition. However, genre studies of his text have become marginalized since New Criticism failed to appreciate the poet's dialectic relationship with history and the value of his works as an extensive cultural text. My essay focuses on Crane's preoccupation with genre formation with a reading of his representative American epic, The Bridge.
In this essay, I elucidate three levels of the epic: the historical-social, the mythological, and the psychological level. My aim is to reveal Crane's pattern of composition and compositional evolution in The Bridge. Crane combines his epic ambition with formal inventiveness and redefines and reconstructs history in a new form of polyphony and complexity. In his epic, Crane seeks to represent early twentieth-century America (a metaphor of the capitalist world system) through the mythical method and to regenerate corrupt reality through the sublime. The poet's conscious and unconscious movement, and his various perceptions and emotions, record the conflict between history, myth, and the sublime. His visionary manipulation of words and genre leads to a synthesis of redemptive imagination and a harsh criticism of modernity. Crane's epic embodies the modernist project to manage and contain social reality in the form and to subvert the closed capitalist system from the inside.
