The objective of this study was to analyze colloquial texts in speeches during the enlightenment period, to examine how such speeches contributed to the development of modern speaking. For this purpose, I first performed empirical bibliographical research for examining the pattern of speeches in the enlightenment period and, based on the results, traced the development process of ‘modern speaking.’
Because the volume of magazines and newspapers issued in the enlightenment period is quite large, I examined the most important ones including Dongnip Sinmun, Jeguk Sinmun and Taegeuk Hakbo. In addition, this study reviewed Seoljungmae, Jayujong, Aegukbuinjeon, Mujeong, Geumsuhoieuirok, Gyeongsejong, etc. which are called discussion style novels, speech style novels or dialogue style novels. Furthermore, I analyzed speech collections such as Yeonseoldaehae and speech textbooks such as Euihoitongyonggyuchik, Yeonseolbeopbang, and Yeonseolbeop Yogang in order to identify intellectuals’ views of speeches in those days and the characteristics of rhetorical strategies in speeches during the enlightenment period.
What is more, using speeches collected from newspapers, magazines and novels during the enlightenment period, I am tracing historical and social situations reflected in the speeches to see how speeches were produced and accepted, how various speech meetings were held in the enlightenment period, how speech meetings were advertised, how audience was attracted and persuaded, etc. Developing these works further, in the future, I will examine the process of speech production and distribution in the enlightenment period in an integrated way in connection to enlightenment planning of enlightenment promoters who tried to foster social values and beliefs in a certain direction by inciting people’s collective emotion and to the social background that people were placed in.
On the other hand, this study compared modern speeches in the enlightenment period with Japanese speeches during the Meiji era. Based on materials related to the speeches of Yukichi and Mita Speech Meeting, I examined the effect relation between Japanese speeches in the Meiji period and Korean speeches during the enlightenment period as well as similarities and differences between them in terms of form and content. In the future, considering that fact that Ahn Guk seon, Kim Chang je, etc. who studied at Keio University and Ire influenced directly by Meiji speeches published textbooks on speech, I will also compare their speech textbooks with speech education books published in Japan in those days. What is more, taking note of the fact that during the enlightenment period, Seo Jae pil, Yoon Chi ho, etc. established Hyeopseong ho in Baejae School and devoted themselves to enlightenment education activities including education on speeches and discussions, I will analyze how the characteristics of discussions activated in American universities during the enlightenment period influenced modern speeches in Korea.
Based on these activities, this study will explain how speech texts in the enlightenment period reflected political enlightenment in the modern enlightenment period and public opinions for the enlightenment of customs during the period of military government in the 1910s, and what rhetorical and expression strategies Ire utilized in order to incite people’s collective emotion. Furthermore, I will extract the methods of designing and writing speeches, rhetorics for attracting audience, speakers’ attitude and posture, etc. explained in speech textbooks in the enlightenment period, and analyze closely how these instructions Ire reflected in actual speech texts. In addition, I will make inquiry into how the purposes and necessities of speeches and speakers’ perception of society and aims demanded by speech educators influenced speakers’ activities and their speech text writing in those days.
