lassroom instruction has been discussed to improve teachers’ instructional professionalism, using the methods such as open class, class consulting, class council, class supervision etc. However, the efficiency of the discussion is questionable because of the superficial discussion of the class. Class criticism by the teacher’s community has been studied and conducted as an alternative to the superficial discussion of class. The purpose of this study is to discuss various perspectives of art appreciation classes by sharing criticisms of them, as a way to improve teachers’ art instructional competencies, to apply it to teacher education, to analyze its meaning and effect gained in this process and to propose effective ways to implement it in teacher education.
The first year of the research deepens the concept and discussion of the class criticism and examine the possibility of applying previous research about the various points of view of class criticism to art appreciation classes by analyzing the previous research. Next, this research compares, analyzes, and discusses points of view of class criticism which apply to preliminary-teachers’/teachers’/researcher’s criticism of art appreciation classes. The research discovers that the viewpoints of the class critics lies somewhere between the contrasting perspectives, such as those centered on the general structures and procedures of the class – i.e. the scientific dimension of the class – and those focused on the unique characteristics of an appreciation class – i.e. the artistic dimension of the class. There are seven viewpoints that are discovered, which are explained in the paper. Based on these results, this research derives proper and various viewpoints of art appreciation class criticism.
In the second year, the findings of the first year research are applied to the lectures of the researchers, and their experiences are analyzed and the module of class criticism lecture for art appreciation class is derived. This research is meant to investigate why class criticism is the effective solution at this moment by bringing more expected effects when the understanding and applying of the various points of view of class criticism to art appreciation class is premised.
In order to clarify and deepen the art class criticism, we review discussions about contemporary art criticism, various types of art criticism, and stages of art criticism. Based on the synthesis of these related discourses, this study suggests effective ways of using class criticism for art appreciation class.
