The purpose of this study is to develop the second trauma prevention training program for the trauma specialist in the first year and to prove effectiveness by applying the developed program to the actual field in the second year.
The results of the research based on the research plan are as follows.
1. Contents and results of 1st year research
Goal: Develop secondary trauma prevention training program manual
(1) Investigating and organizing overseas literature related to secondary trauma, secondary trauma prevention and intervention programs
(2) A questionnaire survey was conducted on 200 counselors from all over the country. As a result of the questionnaire survey, I analyzed and organized the secondary trauma status of the counselors of the child protection specialist, factors to be included in future prevention programs, and suggestions
(3) Focus group interview (FGI) of two groups to represent child protection professional organizations.
Based on the results of the surveys related to the secondary trauma through the FGI and the draft contents of the program, opinions were gathered on the final draft of the program to be developed.
(4) Final program confirmed based on FGI analysis result
Advised the expert on the draft of the program manual and finalized the manual to reflect the consultation results
2. Contents and Results of Second Year Research
Objective: To validate the effectiveness of the second trauma prevention training program
(1) Identify groups to participate in the final program and comparative groups to measure effectiveness
(2) We conducted three group programs for 27 people in three regions, conducting preliminary surveys and post-surveys.
A total of 23 subjects were subjected to a pre-test survey and a post-test survey after one month.
(3) After 3 months from the end of the program, the experimental group and the comparative group were further investigated
(4) The secondary traumatic stress, depression, stress coping, and resilience scores of the experimental group and the comparative group were measured. As a result, the experimental group participating in the program showed decreased secondary traumatic stress and depressive symptoms, Stress coping methods are used more and resilience is increased.
On the other hand, the comparison group that did not participate in the program showed that the secondary traumatic stress decreased very little, the depressive symptom became serious, the stress coping method was less used, and the resilience level decreased.
Analysis of the statistical significance of the changes in the experimental group and the comparison group and the analysis of the changes at the 3-month after the end of the program are planned to be covered in a published paper in near future.
The secondary trauma prevention training program developed through this study is designed to allow counselors of child protection specialist organizations, which are known to have a relatively high burn-out and turnover rate in social welfare practice, to recognize and control secondary trauma. As a result, the quality of services for children and parents affected by child abuse can be improved. The program developed in this study will be applied to professionals practicing clients with trauma problems that deal with issues such as child abuse, domestic violence, sexual violence, mental disorder, addiction, suicide, and disaster.
