Dance majors often exposed to injuries and stresses due to the training situation where it exceeds the functional bound or limit of themselves. They pursue thin and lean body figures even in these harsh training situations, and basal physical fitness of them is on the side of weak. Moreover, in case of dance major curriculum in Korea, hours of practice is more than enough that it is crucial for majors to have education regarding health. Training of both physical technique and psychological control are required as well.
The intent of this research is to complete wellness education model applied with unique characteristics of dance, and it is explore to various ways of application with seeking the potential to be continued rather than one time application. It will educate and provide wellness factors to dance majors, and support them to build up their intellectual knowledge. The continuous application of this program will allow dance majors to prevent themselves from getting injuries and exhausted, and ultimately, aid them to create healthy environment for dance education. Research objectives to complete these are two: The current situation of wellness of dance majors and how dancer wellness educational program is composed. (1) Wellness Requirement and (2) Psychological and Physical condition of dance majors are two chosen topics of sub-research to figure out the current situation of wellness of dance majors. To figure out the composition of educational program, (1) How self-diagnosis for wellness is composed and (2) How Body-conditioning and Mental training are composed are chosen as two sub-research topics.
To make sure these, documents from in and out of the country regarding wellness were reviewed, and research of current situation was performed. Then, to figure out the requirement, research subjects were chosen, and they were interviewed in depth. To research the current situation, survey was written based on discussion between experts and research of documents. After the objectives of this research were explained to dance major college students, survey was distributed and collected. Based on collected data, the current situation and requirement were analyzed. Prototype including body-conditioning and mentoring program was developed based on the result of analysis and experts’ meeting. Developed prototype was edited and improved with continuous experts’ meeting.
To figure out the requirement regarding the dance environment, four experts of dance education and injury were asked to answer semi-structured questions and interviewed. Results of analysis showed that even if students know the causes and prevention of injuries, it is almost impossible to control every situation. Since minimizing of injuries are only achievable with support of educators and cooperation of environment, it is essential to explore the field in order for dance majors to overcome the injuries and keep the best condition. Also, it is shown that developing the environment for dance majors where they can easily access the information about prevention, cure, and remedy of injuries.
Result of survey about current situation of injuries and physical condition that 110 of dance majoring college students have is following. 92.9 percent (102 students) of all respondents have experience of getting injured. It is shown that most of injuries (85.5 percent) were occurred during the practice. According to the survey of their psychological condition of 130 dance majoring college students, they form distorted image of physical body compared to ordinary people, and they have irregular eating habits. Especially, the correction of distorted image of body and eating habits of female dancers are crucial and thus, systematical education regarding this is necessary. Also, It was confirmed that it is necessary factors to be improved for the healthy dance training due to the fact that seriousness of stress and sleep latency hour result was directly related to the lowering of motivation, physical and mental exhaustion, and affective disorder.
Based on this, essential training field is deducted, and educational model was developed with knowledge verification with experts. Dancer wellness educational program model is composed with theories and practices focused on motion running system, energy generation system, motion program generation system, and psychological system. In the program model, function and structure of musculoskeletal system, basal physical fitness and nutrition, composition of human body, motion techniques, and dancing psychology are taught, and based on these, writing profiles about performance factors and planning training method are composing the course model.
Dancer wellness can be realized through diagnosis stage where various factors influencing on performance of dancing are measured and analyzed, recognition stage that is process of accepting and understanding of finding what are needed and the real cause of problems interrupting dancing, setting goal stage where goals are set voluntarily after finding the goals in each area, and repeated training stage where wrong ideas and habits formed from long time ago get corrected with repeated training. Dancer’s will to train voluntarily is the most important factor, and thus, necessity of self-diagnosis of dancer wellness discussed above is crucial. When correctional training is well achieved, healthy dancing field will be completed.
